My Portimao G80 Build (coming from an F90 M5C)

I am coming from a F90 M5c so not the typical progression. I guess I would say I am just after trying out the newest toys. The F90 was an amazing car but it's also big and not really something I think I would have enjoyed tracking. Whereas I am hoping this G80 will remind me of the feels of when I tracked my previous F80 frequently.

I get that the Portimao is a standard 3 series color and that's why I haven't seen many posts of people going with this color but I guess I am hedging that the 'exclusivity' will just be in the bold design of the G80. BMW blues are just fantastic (except Yas Marina... yuck).

Anyway, here is my G80 build currently in Status 112 with a Week 5 (next week) build date. I am planning on doing Performance Center Delivery sometime in late March.

21TP M3 Competition
C31 Portimao Blue Metallic
ZPL Parking Assistance Package (surround view!!)
ZPX Executive Package
1T8 826m bi-color wheels
3MF Individual shadowline lights
48C M carbon bucket seats
4MC Carbon fiber trim

$83,195 MSRP. Got a decent below MSRP deal that pushed me over the edge.

Will document as it progresses!

Congratulations! I am headed more & more towards Portimao Blue based on recent photos that I've seen

What interior color did you go for?

Your build is very similar to how I'd spec the M3 except:

1. I'd go with the 825M wheels
2. I will select the Exterior CF Package instead of the CF Bucket Seats
3. I'm going with AWD

Congrats on your order! Don't worry about exclusivity of Portimao. I think it's an awesome blue and is well suited to the lines of the G80. I totally agree w/ you that Yas Marina is terrible. I was so looking forward to getting a blue F80 until I saw Yas Marina in person. To me, due to the highlights in the clear coat, it just made the blue look faded... almost like the car had old paint with the clear coat deteriorating. Most of the yas marina pictures on the internet look nothing like the faded blue that it looks like in real life.

Portimao OTOH, looks fantastic in real life and will look perfect on your G80.

I went with Black with only Extended Merino, not Full.

I don't want to give away too much out in the open but it was more than a couple of % off MSRP with base MF.

That is exactly what I spec'd out, minus the CF seats....

Mine is off the coast going around Nags Head North Carilona towards Brunswick on the Horizon Highway.

I waffled on the seats a lot. I had resale/lease assumability in mind in case I wanted to get out of the car early (quite possible) someone may value them less since it is a 'big' change in perceived comfort and future resale. I love the seats , I think the cost is a good deal for what one is getting, and I think I will enjoy them myself but that is the reason that I waffled. In the end, personal gratification won over.

You haven't seen those? It's a G82 but still gives you an idea

Hopefully the mountain weather will be good for driving it home in March. I'm hoping/planning on a April/May PCD back to Ohio as I figured the weather would be good by then, and not that I could get it any sooner anyway.

I was going to go PB, but decided to go with a custom color in the end. PB looked great and I wasn't really that concerned about exclusivity, but it was kind of close to Estoril that's been around for awhile and I wanted something a little new and different. Still looks like a great option though.

And, I loved my Yas M4's. Got a super ton of compliments on the color. I get that some people love it and some less so though.

Interesting to see what you think of this car compared to our F90s. I'm also considering potentially swapping my F90 for a G82 M4 CS when the time comes. Did you have the full leather interior in your F90? After I got this option on my M5 I think it's a must have, takes the interior game up a notch.

Keep us updated when you get the car, especially what the reduced power feels like and handling etc.

I remember following the Horizon Highway as it rounded the outer banks with my F90 onboard back in March 2019.

Wonder how many trips each one of these car carrier ships makes across the Atlantic each year? 6-7 round trips per year or more is my guess.

Thinking of making the same switch. F90 to G80. My F90 has the full Aragon leather and I'd spec the full leather again in the G80. Agree it takes the luxury up a notch. Also getting the carbon buckets.

I'll be going RWD 6MT so the experience will be totally different from the F90. Even with less power, I feel the better handling G80 will more than make up for it. RWD 6MT M3 weighs 550lbs less than the M5.

Even crazier, my 2008 E92 335xi coupe weighed only 60lbs less than the new G80 RWD 6MT with carbon buckets!!! And the E92 only had 300hp! Basically same weight but 173 extra hp in the G80! Should be fun!

I think the G8X is still a bit overweight tho, around 200kg more than the F8X. Hopefully you won't feel this weight differential too much. Carbon seats is a must! I don't personally care about getting in and out of the car (maybe because I'm not very old yet haha) so I think you should enjoy these bucket seats while you still can . RWD is also a must (I doubt they'll make an xDrive CS).

On the other hand, the M5, while heavy, still handles great. I've never once thought "Hey, I wish the M5 would handle better". It is a very capable car all in all. And the M5 is one of the few cars whose acceleration still wows me to this day. The way the car accelerates is something else. Once you floor an F90 every other non-supercar just feels like meh. I just hope the G8X will deliver something close to the M5 power experience.

I love it took an M5 owner to be the first person excited for the weight of the G80
I'm also not worried about the weight, I trust BMW that it will feel incredible to drive. People will lose their minds once the batteries come; 4000lbs will be a distant dream.

On the contrary I suspect this is becoming a more common progression, with the ever increasing sizing from BMW of each series, more M5 owners are moving to M3/4s & more M3/4 owners are moving to M2s.
Unfortunately it doesn't leave M2 owners looking for better dynamics anywhere to go.
Nice spec btw.
