2023 G82 M4 Comp - New iDrive
Hi all,
I currently own a 2021 G82 M4 competition and have just ordered a new 2023 model - same car. Upon confirmation of the car build, BMW sent me a graphic file that shows the new iDrive8 that will be installed as no vehciles are available with the current iDrive7 dash configuration. This is just SO disappointing as I think it looks cheap and tacky - like some Hyundai or mainstream electric vehicle. Literally plonked on a revised dash layout with a plastic arm to support it. What the hell BMW!!!! The G82 existing cabin layout is great, it has the mood lighting strips that really made a pleasant night time driving experience - all gone apparently and replaced with some huge curved screen that really doesn't look good at all in my opinion. Can anyone confirm - does this new, crazy layout have the LED strip mood lights in the cabin or is it just a cheap looking vulgar screen we have now? So disappointing - I may even have to look at Audi now... OMG! |

Yes idrive 8 is great I know, you'll love it...
Btw you ordered a 2024 M4, not a 2023, the older one still has idrive 7.

Out of curiosity and I know I'm not really bringing much to the thread, but why are you changing though?

I second the question, why are you disposing of the '21?
Also, I've seen and driven cars with the new screen. It is, I concur, a hideous abomination that appears to be stuck on as an afterthought, and I hate the loss of buttons for ... nearly everything. That said, once you are in the driver's seat and the system is on and you are driving, it's not so bad.

Not sure if this helps, but I recently got a G83 only because I absolutely wanted iDrive7 for the same reason you all stated.
My priority of iD7 was even higher than getting 6MT G82 which was my ideal car. I was on waitlist for G82 since last August but it was so slow I’d end up getting MY24 with iD8, so made the decision to switch to a less-demanded G83, and barely got an allocation with iD7 on February. It’s been only few days since I own it, but I feel I made the absolutely right decision. iDrive7 gauge cluster has this fighter-jet kind of feeling in it. It has physical buttons for climate. The center display is slightly tilted to driver’s POV like C8 corvette. Everything is lovable. And to be clear, I’m happy with convertible too…very fun to drive on nice scenic roads open air! I might be an extreme case to prioritize iD7 over the body style , but I believe a lot of folks here would feel more or less similar. |

i've got a completely opposite view on this. currently have both a 21 G80 6MT ID7 and a 23 G80 xdrive ID8, and much prefer the new setup. the ID7 car feels very outdated after spending a little time in the new model. Screen feels tiny, low res, and i don't care one bit about the physical buttons.

The choice to move to idrive 8 wasn’t mine, someone totaled my ‘22 G83 and I was forced/blessed to order a ‘24 G83. Having said that I love the look of the screen having seen it in person on various newer BMW’s. Can’t fight progress!

We need an iDrive thread every month lol
I’ve seen many people here mentioning iD8 is actually pretty good! I think it ultimately comes down to preferences, but I agree it has some benefits and better techs than older one. Unless it’s a deal-breaker (like it was for me), I guess both iD7 and iD8 are great in their own way. |

My 2022 X5M has ID7, and I really liked it.
My 2023 M3 has ID8 and when I originally saw the dash design, I was pretty put off on it. But having used it for 2+ months, I've come to really enjoy it. When you sit in the car, the whole propped up display issue is moot, and the resolution is much higher and bigger than the ID7 screens. ID8 itself if fluid, and looks very modern. There are a ton of of little animations that looks pretty cool and only appreciated when you spend time in ID8. |

Enjoy your Audi? Just don’t be sad when I dust you at every stop light lol. Seriously though, id8 is friggin awesome. If all you are doing is judging it from pictures, do yourself a favor and go and check it out and use it before you buy that older, slower, audi. Or don’t, idc tbh. The id8 h8 is dumb. I am using it and it’s great. Screens are really nice. Good job BMW! |
