Had it on my M2C and now on the '23 G80 and in both cases, my phone gets toasted and comes to a crawl due to the heat, while barely trickle charging.

Now I have a USB cable in the center console to charge my phone and I just tuck it away there for a clean cabin.

It could have been great but as it stands, the wireless charger is a novelty that has no benefit, not for me at least.

I originally voted in the "happy" camp on this poll and thread with my iPhone XS that I hung onto for a long time. I would re-vote in the unhappy column with my Pixel 6 Pro. I haven't changed what I use my phone for in the car (basically just BT calls) but even on a long drive the Pixel doesn't charge much.

The stupid thing also randomly decides not to charge on the wireless charger by my bed at night, as well, so I'm not really blaming the car charger...the Pixel just has charging problems.

And again, as has been mentioned earlier…..you need the wireless charger to start your car using your phone only (no key fob or “card” fob). To me, even if the charger is subpar and makes your phone heat up, this makes it worth the $500.

I don't have it in my car but my wife's CX-9 has it and it sucks. I did have a good experience with one in a Tesla S Plaid I rented a few months ago. I am #teamiphone not sure experience with Android.

To all those with wireless charging who experiences their phone overheating….

Do you make sure the screen on your phone is off?

I don’t have wireless charging, but I notice that my screen stays on when in the tray (digital key related?). I’ve started hitting the right side button on my phone so the screen shuts off.

If I leave my screen on, my phone gets pretty hot even without wireless charging.

Would that help the over heating issue?

Not a great pic, I just used some clear, double-sided, reusable tape to keep it tidy.

Slight digression. I don’t use waze for this very reason. It burns so much power compared to google maps.

This. SO much safer than even looking over at the display.

I don't think this is right? I opted to not put wireless charging on my build due to overheating my phone and barely charging in other vehicles I have, but I do have phone as key, and the key card and the wireless charging tray is NFC and it starts. So you don't need wireless charging to take advantage of phone as key.

You’re correct, you don’t need wireless charging to use your phone as a key.

Oh ok…I guess I was given bad information from my CA when I ordered my car. I specifically added it to my build for that reason. Although I like the convenience and clean look of the wireless option, I’m not sure I would have gotten it otherwise.

iPhone 12 mini here. Had it in my '21 M440 and now have an '23 M4 Comp. I think I either opted not to spec it or if it automatically came with the M4 I don't use it.

I use this wireless charging mount from Peak Design, stickied onto the far corner of the infotainment screen (ID7, not ID8, so there's an inactive part of the glass that's just bezel essentially.

https://www.peakdesign.com/products/car-mount

Does a far better job.

There are a lot of things that can be learned from this forum, probably #1 among them is that quite a few people here know more than most CAs.

I did not option the wireless charger for a couple of reasons.
I use a Rok•Form case on my phone with the two magnets built in. It’s great for sticking to gym equipment, golf cart or gas tank when riding motorcycles… You have to remove one of the magnets in order for wireless charging to work.
The other reason is they just typically do not work well (slow and heat up the phone). I currently have them in some of our cars and have had them in multiple vehicles previously. The wire always works much better. I have only ever really needed to charge my phone when doing road trips and the cord just gets put away when not in use. We typically use the Escalade for road trips and the my phone usually sits on the wireless charger plugged in to the cord. 😂
So when given the option on my 23 M3CX it is one of they few boxes I did not check.

Side note: The phone does still have to go in that tray (just temporarily) if using it as your key. You do not need wireless charging for this function. I use it often.

I use the wireless chager as my digital key with my iPhone 13 Pro. I don't need it to charge my phone but haven't used my keyfob since I brought the car home from the dealer. I also have the digital key (credit card) but since I carry my phone everywhere I go it just made sense to use that as my "key".

For those that don't know–placing the phone on the wireless charger activates the digital key stored on my phone.

The problem is I have a popsocket on my phone, so I don't think I can actually charge it because of the popsocket. It doesn't sit flush inside of the charger, so I can't even get it to work.

I don’t have the wireless charging option, but thought I would benefit from having one to eliminate cords.

With my iPhone14 pro, I convinced myself that if I didn’t lose charge during my daily 2hr+ commuting I’d be happy. So I purchased this unit from Amazon (link below) and it exceeded my expectations so far (1 week).

1) phone still starts car on the charger which uses the 12v dc cig lighter
2) has a button to push where it opens up to acccept the key card to start the car
3) charges my iPhone 25% per hour
4) has usb (c) ports and doesn’t cover the OEM usb port.

I have the iPhone pro so my camera sticks out a bit further than the non-pro phones, so I’m guessing a bit more performance on the non-pro phones might be possible.

Phone gets warm but not hot by any means.

I did add a small piece of foam to stop the phone from flying out during M2 launches. Still stays linked to the charger if it slides a bit left/right.
