In my case, it was functional. Made it far more difficult to see all the parts and tools in the back. No way my company would have paid for tinting our cars if it didn't save them money overall.

I haven't tinted my last two cars more because I don't run a front plate and I don't want to give LEOs another reason for a traffic stop. But I don't think tint is "cool" or "uncool". It's more functional than anything. Except for windshield tint, which I always thought was silly.

I think no tint or really light tint looks best as far as appearance goes. It gives more depth when looking at it.

Well, you can get a 70% super light tint (not even noticeable, it will look un-tinted), and it will block just as much UV radiation and solar rays coming into the car as dark limo tint.

So the darkness of the tint doesn't directly correlate to the level of UV radiation and solar rays block, it's the quality of the tint.

I used to get 20%, but I loved my light-colored seats too much this time to block their view when I'm walking up to the car. So I went with a light 50% ceramic tint this time, no regrets. And the cabin is still kept quite cool.

Exactly! I'm on the same track as you, just ahead a bit in years. Now I'm at 50% to be comfortable at night in a convertible (which already has less visibility sans tint). 30% on my wifes car vs 50% on mine is night & day (no pun intended &#128512. Lasik a few years ago also messed with my night vision a bit.

All factors to consider.

Had to edit this. A few examples of tint progression over the years on some of the cars 20, to 30 to 35 to 50. Note the 911 with the towel draped over the door panel to temove the door tint directly after Lasik because It was too dark at night!

Both my 'TB G82 & SG G83 are 50% ceramic for reference

Not a chance. I’ll take practical over image any day. My days of worrying about driveways and pot holes are over. To each his own 😉

I put 50% on the front windshield, 15% all other windows. That's because I have many issues (eczema + rosacea + photophobia + floaters) and I legitimately need the tint (state law is 35% at most). While the shop doing the tint does not give me any factory warranty because of the "illegal" percentages, I will 100% feel better when Summer comes.

You need a reason to tint the vehicle but "looking cool" is never such one, better be "feeling cool when sitting inside", also if you tint your vehicle really dark, no matter what vehicle you drive, to me it appears to be a drug dealer.

Yes, being cool wasn’t really what I meant. Just comfort in the situation you’re in.

I think tint can look good if not too dark. Stock tint always looks good quality on the premium vehicles. I really dislike the way aftermarket tint looks on rear windows. You always seem to get the un-tinted border around it.

Things that are not cool at all? Not being able to see clearly via your mirrors in anything darker than daylight!

I'm on team no-tint until we are able to adjust our auto-dimming mirrors, and it all depends on the car for me.

Some sort of heat protection is mandatory here in Texas, so I have 80% everywhere. Add in the protective film on the outside of the windshield and I'm starting to wonder about a class action lawsuit against BMW for selling cars with glass that isn't fit for its purpose.

LOL at so many justifying their tint because of heat rejection and a strong summer sun in their region.

But ultimately, if one thinks that it simply looks cool to tint the windows and/or windshield dark based primarily on aesthetics, that's fine too. Looking cool is oftentimes more important than being cool inside the cabin.

We car enthusiasts spend a lot of money on items for our cars simply because they "look cool", with no measurable or meaningful benefit other than aesthetics. So if you live in a country where it's chilly and dreary much of the time and where summers are short, and you still want to put a 5% limo tint on your G8X, have at it.

We own M cars, most of which never set foot on a track...so, many of us are posers anyway, and have no real need for 500-hp cruise missiles on the street. And then we mod the hec out of them, oftentimes for additional performance, for the street.

So you do you, because you paid a lot of money for your car, so mod it as you wish, for whatever reasons you decide. No justification needed besides "it's what I wanted".

I felt completely exposed when I first got my car! The 2 weeks I had to wait for tint was painful, I'll never own a vehicle w/o the darkest tint I can put on it...

I drive around almost exclusively with the windows down - save for in the rain/cold and on the highway. Tint is good for glare/heat reasons. It sucks at night. It's very nice for the gram photos.

Came here to say the same thing... I moved from Chicago -> FL and always thought having anything darker than 35% sides and having a windshield tint was dumb...

Now, when I get in cars like rentals with no tint and try to commute to work.. I feel like it's just bad for your skin to have the sun on you for that long with no protection.
I run 15% sides and 45% windshield - full ceramic tint. The car stays 10x cooler when I get into it after work and protects my skin from the harmful UV rays.

However, if I lived up North and had gray and cold days for half the year... I may reconsider the 15% sides and darker windshield tint and opt for something more practical. However, I would still run a 70% ceramic windshield tint regardless of where I live after having one here in FL.
