AWD that I can turn off. That's why I went with an F90, best of both worlds.
Assuming the G8x AWD will have a similar set up, or no?

RWD. I like the handling characteristics better and the lighter weight is a big plus too.
Regarding the winter, my old F80 held up to CT snow and ice easily. Just get some really good, meaty snow tires and you'll be fine with rwd. |

I agree. I used to have an E46ZHP and with snow tires in the snow, it was very capable. Something about RWD

All I know for sure is from my experience driving my RWD M340i… Great car, but with 255 rears on PS4S, the engine management wants to cut torque in the first two gears to maintain traction and stability and my car is significantly down on power by comparison. Very rarely do I get cleanly off the line when I push it from a stop and sometimes even rev hangs on the 1-2 shift. The car just doesn’t have enough tire for the job. Yes, 285 is a much wider tire but not that much wider when you’re adding another 120hp in comp spec! So my best guess is the AWD will be much faster in gears 1, 2, 3 because the ecu won’t limit the torque as much. If you’re daily driving the thing, you’ll be spending a lot of time in those first three gears. If I went with RWD, I’d be looking for 305s to put in the back.

Too many combos when you add in the manual. I'd lean RWD manual as it keeps the car at mid-70s. I also like that they raised the level of the shift knob compared to the F80. Hopefully BMW addressed the terrible traction on the RWD version.

Totally agree, there is this miss conception that AWD is for winter driving but the greater benefit is the added agility near the limit. Those that keep thinking that RWD is more fun wait till they try the AWD on the track. I just got a 2021 M340xi with the cooling pkg and can't wait to take it to the track. If after the G80 reviews come out and it turns out that is not much more superior to the F80 I will keep my M340 for a while before upgrading to the G80 if not I will trade it next year for the AWD G80.

And those 105 lbs are located at the bottom of the car and longitudinally centered. They are forward from the COG but behind the front axle. You’d be hard pressed to notice any significant impact in a 3800 lbs - 500 hp car. The added traction in all conditions should surely make up for it in average speed around a track.

I agree, our G20 M340 are not track ready cars like the M3, especially considering the possibility for heat soak, which the cooling pkg will mitigate some what. However, the M340 does have a very good suspension and powerful brakes (also part of the cooling pkg) which should still provide for a fun track day experience.

AWD vs RWD
I have allocation (supposedly) for an AWD M3 but am considering changing to a RWD. As someone who lives in the NE where it snows 2-6 times per year having AWD isn't really the end all be all in that regard.
So, I guess my question is outside of the poor weather grip improvements am I missing out on anything else? I care more about track handling then I do about my 0-60 times.

I would wait for the AWD reviews before deciding. You could be missing out on serious speed advantages in all conditions including a dry track. Handling “feel” could be negatively impacted or hardly noticeable.
Way too risky to guess at this point if you care about the difference. On the other hand if the RWD ticks all your boxes and you don’t care if the AWD will outperform it with little to no disadvantages well then I see no harm in swapping now. I never had an AWD M car but I will wait, AWD is IMO this generation’s biggest new feature and I want it unless it’s really detrimental to the handling dynamics. |
