Thankfully for me (and him) only the one. When it happened with my F82 it was both sides.
In the end it's the same amount of grief either way

That shop needs to pay in full. Obviously, the repair should be performed at BMW.

What's the name of the shop?

Damn that's crazy, hopefully they pay up.

Sort of related, I was always under the impression that in the UK we couldn't tint the front windows because they come with basically the max tint allowed from factory, is that not the case?

He should have insurance for this. Hopefully he does! Im very sorry to see this OP.
Thanks for the understanding appreciate it.
I'll gauge his reaction to the costs once I present them to him, but I'll not hesitate to go the legal route if I get any delay or further BS.
It's going to be costly that I know, but he must have been aware it was all going south quickly. He's pushed way past the point of justifying it as a legitimate error and he's only himself to blame.
If the install had been completed professionally and maybe he'd unluckily damaged something by accident then fine, shit happens, you own up and you talk to the customer. But no, he throws everything back together and even accepts the part payment I gave out of goodwill knowing he's done some real damage. All I can see now is him bashing the door/window seal with his hand to try and seat it properly when I was waiting outside looking in.

Like trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube…..

I tint windows at my shop and own a 21 m4 and can tell you for sure on this car nothing has to be removed to bottom load the tint. I can’t believe a shop with paying customers would ever do this kind of work, you are 100% right about making Them pay to get it back exactly like it was before he hacked it up. Hope you it get squared up soon

Lol I fckin know. Imagine not even taping up the leather JIC you damaged it. Even just to show the customer you care enough. 50 cents worth of 3m masking tape, although I don't think in this case it's relevant. A sharp spike of metal is always wining that battle.

Is this a real shop with some sort of social media/online presence, or just a guy doing this work on the side?

Does he regularly work on cars of this caliber (and above)?

I asked about and he'd recently done an x6 M50 and RS6. Both new cars. That's what made me feel comfortable.
Not sure how they compare technically as far as the install process.

Sounds like he may have been BS'ing since he told you that he's worked on G8x before, too.

I hope your conversation with him goes as it should. I use a service that costs $75 + court fees to file small claims anywhere in the country with a 10-15 minute time investment to type up the details of my concern. They do all the research and serve the defendant and submit the claim so that the other side pays all the fees in the end. That reduced the friction of taking someone to court to practically zero. It's been an effective way to get folks to do the right thing.

class actions are where there are a large number of plaintiffs who jointly sue the defendant. doesn't seem like that's the case here. this would be a standard small claims suit assuming the damage is below 5k GBP (small claims limit in Scotland).
