It's obvious the new m3/m4 is no longer a lightweight sports sedan/coupe and it's turned into a big GT car m5/m6. The dimensions are just that much bigger.
You'll have to wait for the new m2 for a true lightweight option and a shorter nimble wheelbase. |

those of us who old enough to drive a bmw E30 understand that you can not bring the joy of driving to a heavy car by adding more horse power. This is pure physics.
I have more fun daily driving my1400 kg anemic 360 horsepower i8 than my gazillion horsepower 2 tons M5. The art is making a light car with a good steering feels and reasonable horse power. I think Bmw nailed this with the 2 series. The rest of the lineup is pretty much are like other competitors, Having said that I'm itching to drive new M4 |

The style of this video is straight out of 1990's high school education. For some reason I love it.

BMW will not spend more money on lightweight parts for the cheaper/lower end M2. The current M2 is heavier than the F8x (with less power), so it doesn't make sense to think the future will be different.

Also something that no one really thinks about ... the base M3 / M4 is *not* widely available in other markets... AFAIK it's only for the US and Germany, so most of the point is moot for 90% (99% ?) of the marketed countries will only have the competition version car available...

There is a certain charm to the potato quality and vertical recording. It looks like it was recorded by an 8 year old Android phone with a dirty lens. The weight gain is really not that bad. |

Official bmw site states M4 Comp at 1800kg and M5 Comp at 1970 kg and there you are at 375 lbs. Add another 65 kg for the awd on M4 (as per 4 series with/without xdrive), and there you are only 200 lbs less than the M5

Performance?
In a straight line HP can compensate for weight. Can it do a better lap time on technical course (one with turns)? This is the issue for the added weight. define performance before comparing performance. |

This go around we have a reworked engine that has been in an SUV for 2 years, grills, carbon seats, blue seats, a skittles bag of exterior colors. Feels like the marketeers were in charge of this one and that is why the substance is not being shared. I might sign up again because of AWD and wanting something I can drive year round with two little ones in the back. |

Finally, all has been revealed. This makes more sense now. It was simply not possible that it was gaining 400lb apples to apples
DIN weights have been available for some time, so we have all the deltas between G80 vs G82, 6MT vs 8AT We also know the weight delta of CF seats vs regular seats: 10kg, 22lb Per the video, in LB F82 DCT full tank: 3615 G82 6MT full tank + CF seats: 3689 G82 6MT full tank + regular seats: 3712 G82 ZCP + CF seats: 3745 G82 ZCP + regular seats: 3767 The most apples to apples comparison is the F82 DCT vs the G82 ZCP with regular seats. 152lb weight gain. This isn't good, but it's half of what I expected. If you consider that now you can oem source the nice CF seats I have an F80 CS which I've weighed with a full tank at 3657lb G80 6MT full tank + CF seats: 3701 G80 6MT full tank + regular seats: 3723 G80 ZCP + CF seats: 3756 G80 ZCP + regular seats: 3778 So, apples to apples, F80 CS to G80 ZCP= 121 with regular seats and 99 with CF seats Some more data, power/weight My F80 CS DCT: 8.06lb/hp G80 6MT regular seats: 7.87lb/hp G80 ZCP regular seats: 7.51lb/hp edit: data updated as my F80 CS full tank was 3657. The 3610 number was normalized to half a tank of gas, which isn't what we're comparing against here

I understand that weight gaining is never a good thing, but it's also not necessarily the ultimate crucifix either. My main concern was the 300-400 lbs gain weight that we were made to believe which as we've seen now is considerably less. Keep in mind this car will have an even stronger engine with even better power delivery, oh yeah and better brakes and room for more tire. As was clearly stated, with Cup tires this car will be faster than the M4GTS, now it's just a matter of how much faster and with what kind of driver feedback.
To put things in context, a Camaro 1LE which is touted as one of the best drivers cars not only weighs about as much as the G8X but also has less horsepower. I only bring this up because again weight is perhaps one of the most important factors in a sports car equation but at the same time it's also not the only and ultimate. I will reserve judgement and stay tuned for the rest of the chapters in this multi series release, but all I can say is at this point I'm pleasantly surprised. Hopefully one of the next chapters will address the track performance. |

First the weight gain appears to be 400lb and everyone rallies against that. Now it turns out the weight gain is much smaller, 152lb worse case, 66lb best case. And yet still, the hate fest continues You may think it's specific to the G8X, but it isn't, it's to everything BMW does. When the M2 CS came out there were infinite hate for it. Why would anyone get this instead of a Porsche GT4, blah blah blah. 'For this money I'd go PCar' Then the price came out, cheaper than the GT4. Still, no respite from the hate EVO mag chose it as their COTY for 2020... do you think that made any difference? |
