I haven't, and not sure I ever will. I'm very selective about spending big money on something that doesn't tick all the boxes. I also don't like how they lump the complaints as people not liking the grille going big. IMO the whole front end is poorly executed. There are a lot of ways they could have introduced something dramatic, even with a larger grille, but this was a swing and a miss. I won't give up entirely on the M3 because I'm sure it will be stellar under its skin. I will just wait and see what the LCI changes bring.

The problem is beyond the aesthetics (grill, kink, rear) the car is heavy with a automatic. I wouldn't be surprised if the stats are similar between the F8x and RWD G8x.
This has never been the case with previous generations Edit: I want to like this car but I don't think it will ever happen. It's just wrong for me. |

I don't like the weight either but imho you are DRAMATICALLY underrating the S58. |

The S58 is what it is. It makes more power but has more lag and has a higher boost threshold than the S55. Power only makes a car accelerate faster, less weight makes a car faster everywhere. Biermann had figured that out with the F8X.

This is less a "review" and more an opinion article. I agree with the take though - was just hoping to hear something new when I started reading

You are drastically under-rating it and i'm rating it objectively. How does it feel to have words put in your mouth? Perhaps adding "imho" would change the likelihood of you adding to the conversation and not getting thrown onto an ignore list like others with low rep to post ratios.
I'm treating this as a 550-600whp engine which is exactly what it is. There is no other modern mass produced inline 6 motor that exists that puts out that much power, if not more with boost. I made no comment about the weight or other aspects of the car. Others are welcome to try and change my mind my viewpoint with sources. No one has even pushed a S58 to stage 2 based on my knowledge, but glad to be proven wrong that this engine is worse or equal to an S55. Last edited by Avaley; 10-26-2020 at 09:31 AM.. |

I want the car to be 3000 lbs 800 hp sure, but its MY OPINION that many are writing this car off before a single driving review has been made is silly. FWIW i think it will handle worse than an F8x but would bet a G87, which will likely be similar weight to f8x, beats a F8x around the Nring by more than 10s. Perhaps the best solution for hardcore enthusiasts and BMWs intention, is to clearly segment the buyer base of g82 and g87. Last edited by Avaley; 10-26-2020 at 09:36 AM.. |

FWIW here is the video I was taking my data points from. I feel we can agree Joe Achilles is on the enthusiast end of the spectrum and he didn't have any gripes about the weight and a great impression of the LOWER POWERED car.
He owns a M2C, stated it handles great and is faster in a straight line than his car. All i'm trying to say is don't get your panties in a bunch until you drive it ie THE POINT OF THE ORIGINAL POSTER AND ARTICLE!!!! |

Late to the game, but I just now read the Drivetribe article in the OP. What a joke and clueless write-up, it's a shame to call this journalism. He caught my attention when writes that folks focus too much on the grill and not enough on the engineering that went into the car, so I eagerly read on expecting to learn something technical about the car. But he just goes mumbling on by bringing nothing about that "engineering". Wait, probably because BMW did the same in their press release. He then writes how this is the best M3 ever without putting any substance to his argument. What a piece of writing crap. Unless that was the whole intention...

The quality of the piece was pretty evident when his second paragraph literally compared the angst over the G8x styling to angst with Instagram. The guy is not a journalist, or an automotive writer, has no real driving experience... just a kid blogging BS in search of likes.

I kept waiting for some data or objective numbers in the piece, but it was just a long run-on ramble of thoughts. I feel like this piece was commissioned specifically by Munich lol

In reality, the flat 6 NA works great in that chassis given the lower weight, handling dynamics and emotional connection. But modding the 982 to fit a twin turbo six cylinder would cannibalize 992 sales as 600hp in a 3300lb car would be silly. |

So true. I was really thrilled to see that with the f8x but never enjoyed the s55. Still I thought what a great direction to take. Wondered how much more engaging the next 3/4 would be as a result and....what happened? The weight isn't a small increase it's massive. I don't need 500hp, I need an M3 to be fun. It's just an M5 now.
