I think that's actually the consensus around here. (including myself)

I'm with ya'll on that. The regular 4 is horrendous

Bland, bloated, and that grill is

The M4 looks 1000X better.

One thing is for sure, the new M3/M4 is super aggressive looking , & differentiates itself alot more from its 3/4 series counterparts

I for one welcome that change.

You really don't need a loud color with this car, it has such road presence .
Agree. The car is menacing looking. With a little bit of a drop and maybe spacers it'll look even better. I waited for the lci version for the f80 to finally pull the trigger and I still love my f80. So I think I'll do the same here, wait a year or two for the lci.

I'm with you on that timeline. Well sorta

G80 LCI starts production July 2022.

& my lease is up in August that year.

So perfect timing to order a new build, and take delivery.

Just not sure yet if I want the M3 or M4. No kid's yet just the fiancee.

My mind is telling me get the 4-door . It's baby proof . But my heart is telling me get the coupe

Absolutely love the rear taillights on the 4. Not so much on the 3 series. Hopefully LCI addresses that issue.

I mean history has shown us, BMW almost always upgrades headlights and/or taillights for LCI .

But the M3 rear wheel arches are just to die for. Another thing swaying my decision

Wonder if any of these reviewers commented on G8x power vs F82 GTS? Almost the same hp and almost 10% gain in torque

Yup you've seen my posts in that other thread, so you'll know all the negative points he mentioned were exactly what I thought. Lots of positives, and I genuinely think most (especially initial) buyers will like this more than F8X because it doesn't have those sharp/raw edges
Agreed! I can't wait to see the track based comparisons. Joe Achilles got a 3.7 in his 0-60 test in cold weather.

Check out the Mat Watson review on the Carwow YT channel. He gets a 3.6 0-60 and an 11.6 (from memory) 1/4 mile in the SPY M4 Comp

My take is consistent with your view that CH, as a journalist, tried to point out the pros and cons, trying to be as fair as possible, knowing reviews are inherently subjective. And the biggest subjective from CH that I heard is that the car was not as fun to drive. This brings me back to the old days whenever C&D and other reviewers did a comparison test and the Benz or Audi ticked enough boxes to win on paper but, despite that, they pick the BMW because of the "fun factor." Those days are gone.

And finally, I absolutely agree that if you read between the lines and look at his muted reaction compared to other reviews where CH really liked the car, that he did not think highly of the G8x. Indeed, I am reminded of his review of the F80 when it first came out and his reaction was like that of a giddy kid on Christmas morning repeating superlatives like "This is spectacular, I think" or "It moves the game massively from the last car [E9x M3]" or "It's just stupendous!" or "Wow, wow, wow!" - and you know when he reeealy likes a car and when he's, like, meh.

Here was CH's F80 review. And this was the base F80, not CP or CS modesls. You can easily tell he's a lot less excited driving the G80.

Just on an arbitrary standard back road. That isn’t bad. And he really likes it...his conclusion:
Just go out and buy it, cause it’s mofo bad@ss!

That guy drives a helluva lot of cars so when something stands out to that degree it’s a good sign.

It is not a driver's car, it is a compromise.
This is the reality that some cannot accept. The M3 is now the M5 of old days, and its a different demo. When I was younger, while I luved the E39 M5, I desired an M3, i wanted something small and fun and thats what an M3 was and never would consider a car the M5 size.

Now, its a big luxury cruiser with lots and lots of power, nothing wrong with that statement, its just not an M3.

Im at a diff point of life and I see this G80 as a big comfy powerful car and have to decide if its worth it. The things that some or perhaps many didnt like about the F80, i luved. I luved the raw feel, i luved dct and the way it felt special down low, its supposed to be a sports saloon and it should not be so comfy like a zf8.

The biggest statement from CH was that the engine and transmission didnt feel M special, which ofcourse is true but some cannot accept. Stating the powertrain feels like a more powerful m340i is a massive fail as to me, since i dont track it, the M is all about the powertrain, and it no longer is bespoke but the M tax is higher than ever.
The S58 is equally as bespoke as the S55.

I think the appeal of this car is the stripper setup. Excellent bang for the buck.

Once the options get triggered...the grille starts to look bigger to me...

I feel that the Chris Harris review seems fair, he slams it on looks (subjective), and gives kudos for steering, fun factor, brakes, throttle (turbo) responsiveness. He pans the shift delays in the automatic. It's definitely a car worth test driving if you like the exterior design.

Indeed.

I went to see both cars last weekend. Remarkably, they look even worse in person. The fit, finish, and attention to detail are extraordinary. No doubt the chassis evolution is spectacular- as Harris mentioned "credit to whoever still works there." But man, are they ugly.

And unlike the 928, Panamera, and e82, none of which are friends with the camera, but each of which come off better in-person, the G80/G82 just looks worse in person.

I'm sure they will lease to the garish worldwide and sell to the newly moneyed in developing economies - but man, an LCI can not come soon enough.

Spending time in-person with the whole package is like suddenly approaching vomit on a subway platform- the closer you get, the worse you feel.

Let's hope BMW does not commit the same aesthetic assault to the next M2.

-Michael
Whilst looks are subjective I think the proportions of the G80 look good. Based on the various reviews the consensus is it's hands down better than the F80 in every way apart from its weight. It's going to be a big hit and it will sell well no doubt.
The G82 on the other hand just doesn't look appealing to me, as pointed out in the Throttle House review its not the front end, it's the entire exterior design that looks out of whack. No doubt it's a great performance car but TBH I cannot think of an uglier BMW made coupe... ever.

Like you, I'm hanging out for the G87 M2, and based on the mules we've seen so far and the updated interior we see in the G80/82 I think it will be a winner.

Not as good in weight, price higher, speed is on par, looks many agree not as good, and ZF8 not as good as DCT for non manual driver's. These are pretty fundamental evaluation criteria for an emotional purchase. BMW clearly betting that non BMW converts and new buyers will offset any loss of repeat buyers for whom these criteria dominate. I suspect they'll be proven right.

Is it just me or does the color really affect the way the looks of the G80/82 can be perceived.

M3/M4 with black wheels in Portimao Blue actually looks good.

That’s not the overall impression I get from the reviews. It sounds more like the ZF8 is as fast and better around town than the DCT but lack the drama of the DCT. One reviewer said that he’ll take the ZF over the DCT but not over the newest PDK. I guess that’s will be my take but I’m not a DCT die hard. It’s an automatic to me and if it’s snappy enough I’m good.

In the end I think current DCT lovers will miss it just as I really missed the S65 over the faster S55 due to lack of drama and character but time move on and things change. If the overall package is the big improvement every reviewer seem to think it is even the DCT fans should be ok.

From my recollection of the reviews, the ZF8 is clearly not as good as DCT. But there doesn't appear to exist a better choice for a 4 door 5 seater car.
