That's a lot of damage for a crash below 50mph...however, hope all is well!!!!

That pretty much covers your questions. Summer tires in winter lose the vast majority of their traction, whether on dry pavement, in snow, or on black ice. If nothing else, why drive a performance vehicle, if you throw away almost all of its handling and braking capabilities with a poor and dangerous choice of tires for the conditions? Tires are what connect the car to the road. Phish even sings a song about this. “The tires are the things on your car That make contact with the road The tires are the things on your car That make contact with the road The tires are the things on your car That make contact with the road The car is the thing on the road That takes you back to your abode “I woke up one morning in November And I realized I love you It's not your headlights in front Your tailpipe, or the skylight above you It's the way you cling to the road When the wind tries to shove you I'd never go driving away And come back home without you” Treat yourself, your fellow man, and your car well. Equip it properly.

Some have successfully been reimbursed by local municipalities for damaged wheels due to potholes that were not fixed in a timely fashion.
Hey OP why not try that logic and try to have the township/city cover the loss. Better yet, go eat a well done NY Strip steak with a butter nife... |

Fascinating that people drive on summer tires in cold temp and say “oh I drive just 50 mph I’ll be fine”. No you won’t, cheap ass. You are a danger to yourself and other drivers. You spend $100k on the car and don’t have anger $2k for a winter set of tires? Wtf is wrong with this country.

Can we put this post to bed? The OP is an enthusiast like the rest of us and he learned a lesson, I’m glad he’s okay.
This is now 18 pages of bashing this guy who’s a medical professional working in an ER. Let’s move on. |

I disagree. It is not 18 pages of bashing one person. It is eighteen pages of those who try to defend endangering themselves and others by driving unsafely with the wrong equipment, and others trying to persuade people to drive with the correct equipment for the weather, road, and traffic conditions.

Guys how many of you guys that are talking all this shit actually have PS4S tires on their cars? I have it on my M2 and M5 with out any issues. My temperatures get down to 35 degrees but I don’t usually drive those cars when it’s gets ice cold. Even when I do drive them in the cold I definitely wait until the tires warm up as I drive. Idk if you guys know but these tires warm up when you keep driving so even in 40 degrees it will go upto 55-60 + degrees after they warm up. I NEVER had traction issues or loss of traction accidentally on any of my cars.
The guy slipped on Black Ice and there is nothing you can do about that, idc what tires you put on. Period. |

Winter tires won’t save you from black ice , unless the tires crack through the ice. There is no traction on black ice. Like I said when I drive them in the cold , I get my tires warm enough to even think about picking up speed. I never had traction issues and I don’t drive my cars in freezing temperatures. Freezing temps and cold temps are different. |

You have to drive to warm up the tires. You can’t warm up the tires without driving. You drive, you crash. So, if you have to drive before you warm up, you can crash while driving before you drive. And I’m not going to debate whether winter tires work on ice or not. Kind of interesting some people still don’t understand winter tires exist… a video was posted once or twice already in this thread, I highly recommend watching it/them to learn about winter tires, for folks that live in places that don’t allow them to experience winter tires first hand (perhaps because the weather is mild). |

I drive my car all year round, I swap summer tires with winter tires November-April. Last winter one day it was -20c (-4f) here in NYC and my car handled it brilliantly. You do know that these cars get tested in way colder conditions, right? |

All year round, no matter the temperature, every M car I have ever owned... And one of them is a convertible I still own - drive it all the time straight through the winter. Hec, I plan and take wintertime trips. |

One year when I had my E36M3, it was late October before I got around to putting on my winter tires. When I stacked the summer tires, I noticed there was frozen water, yes ice IN the soft compound. I was driving on frozen tires. |
