Angry Got Into A Car Accident - Pros & Cons

My M4 comp got hit yesterday

I was on the I-15, and suddenly the cars in front of me did a complete stop; I could stop on time. Unfortunately, the 1998 truck behind me did not

Then came the 2021 Chevy truck behind him, which did not stop on time either, causing the 1998 truck to hit my car a second time.

Considering we were going at 80mph and the force from the two hits, I expected my rear bumper to be completely damaged. I was pleasantly surprised by how sturdy this car is.

Cons:
the car got damaged

Pros
no one was seriously hurt

That's a $1000-$1500 repair bill or slightly higher (replace tow hook cover, repaint bumper). It would have been much higher if the rear diffuser was damaged and it was CF.

Will be interesting to see what is going on underneath once it gets to the shop. Either way, glad everyone is OK.

Yep - I got rear ended (not M3) and what looked like bumper/trunk damage ended up being $32,000 once everything got peeled back.

Sorry to hear that. Glad you and others are okay. Looks like the paint transfered over from the other vehicle. Try using some rubbing compound to see if you can get that out. Hurts to watch new vehicles, especially this expensive get into any kind of accident.

I've made a habit, if I end up braking hard I move to the shoulder if possible. I've had a brand new vehicle at the time rear ended I was so pissed, it was only 3 months old. Since then I've learned my lesson.

No way is that only $1-1.5k. Who knows how much damage will be found when the bumper cover is removed, at best I’d say $5-10k.

By my guesstimate that's about $2300 to the body shop if you replace the diffuser with OEM. And the body shop will keep your car 3 days.

They have to remove the tail lights to take off the rear bumper, then separate the diffuser from the Brooklyn Grey rear end piece. Due to the parking sensors removal and reinstallation in the bumper the body shops tack on a vehicle diagnostics fee to scan and verify the sensors. As someone mentioned above it would be a very good time to consider an aftermarket diffuser and provide that to the body shop.

Another con- diminished value if this shows up on your carfax. Take plenty of pictures if you bought vs leased so that the mishap is well documented as minor.

This is the first thing I thought. Years back my 2012 Mustang GT got rear ended I got the body shop to replace with the Boss 302 rear diffuser for a few extra dollars.

Unfortunately, I did not have that option as there were cars on both lanes

The damage is near one of the sensors. They can't, and shouldn't, repair that bumper according to BMWNA. The bumper should be replaced and the body shop is required to Sawzall the serial number out of the bumper and mail back to BMW. Happened to my F82. Luckily I didn't have to deal with them trying to spot match Austin Yellow.

Glad you are ok.

My other car got rear ended and had moderate trunk damage. Was totally still drivable. But repairs were quoted by an OEM Tier 2 certified body shop at $32,000.

Is your other car a Lamborghini Gallardo?

Mercedes A-Class. Yep, you read that right. I guess for the OEM tier 2 shops they use lasers and anything that's moved outside of 2mm or whatever requires full replacing with OEM parts.

Initial appraisal was $8k by insurance guy. Shop came back $32k and 3.5 mo to repair and the offending party's insurance would be stuck paying for a rental car for that long so car was totaled. (I live in an at-fault insurance state)

On the plus side, we bought it for $29k in March '21 and insurance paid out $46k last month, which we promptly parlayed into an M240i order while I wait for the G80 to arrive any day now.
