Joe Achilles spec'ing his new M3 Xdrive

After testing the X drive he decided to give up the 2wd . Nice spec but he is quite the fan boy.

Doesn't seem like he's seen Fiona in real life before spec'ing the car; he says it's a deep red, it's actually much brighter than a red like Tacora. I also think it doesn't go as well with the gold of Dravit as Kyalami does.

Same color combo as mine, should have went red calipers Joe! Fiona is a brighter red and the red calipers are a close enough match that they really tie it together.

Looking forward to the review.

Nope, I've seen a lot of US members mention these but neither appear as standard options in the configurator in the UK. I was of the impression they were individual options out of the catalogue but based on your post, I take it it's "just there" for you to pick on the US config?

Yes they are options just like the other colours (see what I did there!). You can go here to see:

Very interesting - fjord blue on the buckets would be a nice option to have here but Tartufo not being available on the buckets is kinda weird! Lucky you guys across the pond… we can't get a moonroof here either or change the interior trim to anything other than carbon fibre. So a lot more customisation available to the US market.

Different target audience I guess. Super boring video. I don't even know how it made it an hour long. I guess it may make sense for people who don't understand what they gain or give up with each option.

It's not really that there's more customisation available in the U.S. market, but that the UK market is so limited. Continental European markets offer Tartufo, Fjord, and lots of other options too. I believe this is down to the new WLTP method of calculating emissions, so every possible combination of options have to be covered, which is obviously very tedious, so BMW UK choose to include a lot more things as standard, and limit what options you can select. It actually means UK cars are better value, but the flexibility to have more individual examples has gone.

I had originally wanted to go Fiona red on Dravit grey. But it was not allowed on a 21 at the time. So I went with black on carbon buckets. After seeing Fiona in person Im glad they did not allow it. It does not go as well on Dravit as it does on skyscraper and brooklyn.

Doesn't WLTP apply to EU as well so how come they get the increased variety of upholstery choice? I've seen the logic about putting options in packs and can live with that but not offering Blue and Brown leather doesn't make sense to me! Unless we're saying emissions vary between cars with Fjord/Tartufo and the rest (Black/Silverstone/KO/FR/YMB)

Because the EU is a much bigger market, as is the U.S., hence it's financially viable for them to offer more flexibility. A big part of it is the UK being RHD also, and RHD models are built in much smaller numbers than LHD examples.

Anyway, it's BMW UK who choose what options are offered in its own market, and how models are priced. The UK not being offered the base M3/M4 and only offering the Competition model is another consequence of this.
