Blues Comparison: Portimao vs Tanzanite vs San Marino

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hey new member here. I am considering ordering a new G80, and have always loved blues especially on an M car. A local dealership happens to have recent examples of Portimao, Tanzanite, and San Marino, so I thought I would go check them out.

Unfortunately the weather today is cloudy and rainy, so keep that in mind. Probably none of the cars were "at their best".

I think it really is true that you have to see these colors in person to really decide your preferences. I expected to like San Marino the best, but in person I preferred Tanzanite by a pretty big margin actually. In the pictures I took though, I think Tanzanite doesn't look as good - too dark. I think Portimao looks the best in photos.

Also, they had some other M3/4s there, and I have to say Brooklyn Grey looks really good in person, especially with the extended shadowline.

Anyway, here is Portimao, which I think looks the best in photos. (The sky wasn't quite as dark either, which probably helps.)

I'm going with TBII this time around for my M4x, but I will always have a special place in my heart for SMB which I had with one of my M3CS

I don't know what it is about BMWs and blue, but it gets me every time!
My M3 in Portimao is due within a few days, but every time I see San Marino I think I should've gone Individual...

BMW makes the best blues. They're just so good.

Here's TB II on a sunny delivery day at the Performance Center last week (and the following cloudy morning).

You're right: under overcast days the blue highlights disappear and overall it appears midnight blue. But that's one thing I like about the color -- it keeps its secrets till the lighting and angle are right. And then -- pow!

SMB is such a gorgeous color! When the local dealer had an F1x M6 in that color on the showroom floor a few years back, I just got lost staring at its hood contours.

I grappled over whether to order a quasi- or full-fat Individual color, and I ultimately drew the line and chose the former. Had I gone full Individual, SMB was among my top 3 choices. (The others were variations of blue.)

I just wish BMW made San Marino Blue available on any model. This color deserves every accolade.

SMB will always be my favorite, a bit biased haha. It's gorgeous in every condition besides cloudy of course. Very vibrant when it's clean. It's definitely not a lowkey color and will get looks when the sun hits it a certain way 🙂

It's available on any vehicle with individual paints from the X2 and up and 2 series GC (not the 2 coupe yet) and up. Of course, for a price.

I actually like that it's individual. I don't know how I'd feel seeing a bunch of SMBs around town, so I prefer the specialty of it all. When I do I see another one drive in town, I do get a bit giddy inside.

Carbon Black almost shows that much blue in the light. I feel like TBII sometimes shares similar tones but with more Blue compared to CB, both are beautiful colors.

My G80 is PB, and my X3 M40 is Tanzanite. SMB is my favorite, but PB is a pretty good approximation for 4,500 less.

Tanzanite looks great on the X3, but it's dark and needs to be clean or it looks black. Much better than carbon black though - the blue here shines through clearly.

Also have a pic with Interlagos and Le Mans. I love BMW blue

This is the first G83 I ever saw on the road last summer here in Belgium. Portimao blue, which is what I ordered just one week later, absolutely love this colour!!!

I like Portimao. Tanzanite too dark and boring for my tastes.

I used to have a Tanzanite Blue in the previous gen M3.

It is a nice color, but not an exciting one. SMB wins by a mile.

Tanzanite is cheaper and is different than the standard palette. It had that going on for it. Particularly considering how awful the colors where in the past gen M3.

I currently have a MBB in my X3M and I love it. So much better than the TB in my opinion.
