VIN flag >5500 rpm before break in? True?

The 3 managers at my dealer kept saying keep it under 5500 because if you exceed this bmw automatically flags your VIN at the break in service and the car can no longer be CPO, resulting in significantly lower residual value. My questions are 1) anyone heard of this? 2) can they charge you on lease return? 3) are they just covering their ass because the answer to 1) is yes and the answer to 2) is no, thus necessitating them to eat less profit in the pooper on lease return. I looked for threads on other models as well and cannot find any specifically addressing this.

I always lease, drive it hard straight from the dealer and never had an issue. In fact, I don't even recall anyone at the dealer even mentioning it to me. Had a bunch of BMWs and Ms.

I don't think that is true. At least they didn't mention that my car was flagged when it went in for its break in service.

Sounds ridiculous. What if you had to go above 5500 for an emergency situation to avoid a vehicle on the freeway. Now if you routinely did that before break-in and brought it in with engine issues, might be a different story.

Good point. And what if u hit ice or standing water and lose traction? With short gears rpm will shoot to the moon

Modern cars are able to inform you about limits and stop you from breaking them during break-in. New Corvettes for instance literally move the redline lower on the digital gauge for the first 500 miles.

If BMW wanted to enforce driving behavior in accordance with their break-in policy, they would do so easily. Your dealer is clueless, just nod your head and ignore them.

Negative. Launch control is available as soon as it rolls off the factory floor. However, BMW does recommend that you don't do this and allow for break-in to occur….

So getting sideways out of the lot on delivery day is a no go at your dealer? My CA told me keep it under 5500, and I laughed and said I'll break it in like Im gonna drive it. Did my Break in at 900 flat..The techs were all drooling over the car.

There isn't really any activation necessary for launch control. From the technical manual:

This is garbage. Were these sales managers or service managers? What does the actual shop foreman say?

I agree with the other posts in this thread; what other options for dealers do you have in your area because these guys sound like clowns.

In my experience, enthusiast, as found on this forum, are way more knowledgeable than sales or service reps. It's rare to find one that is an enthusiast and actually selling or servicing the brand they work for.

Ya that's BS.

Did a hard break-in on my M4c in June 2018. Zero issues ever.

Then did a hard break-in on my M3 in June 2021. Had the break-in service and no issues whatsoever. Almost 4k miles going strong now.

You have to remember: when euro delivery was an option, everyone was redlining their cars flat out until they hit the limiter on ze autobahn (with under 20 miles on the odometer).
