Would you leave your winter tires on?

I am super excited to do the new owner’s track drive in South Carolina on April 8th next year. I plan on driving there as after the track drive, the fiancé and I are going to hit up tail of the dragon while we are down there.

The question is should I mount my summer wheels and tires on my car before we take the road trip? Living in Chicago I know it will not be over 45 degrees when I come back and need to drive to work in the mornings. But I would much rather have my summer wheels being in South Carolina and driving on tail of the dragon as I am assuming it will be warm.

April isn’t too bad. January, absolutely no way I would put on summer tires. But it is still possible to see snow in April so that will be a gamble as summer tires are absolutely useless in the snow. That xdrive won’t even matter.

+1. Chances are you won't encounter snow/ice in early April, either on your trip or upon your return to Chicago. Just take it easy cornering and braking below 45°F.

Depending on your route there and back, be aware of temperatures in higher elevations in the Carolinas. When we drove our M4 back from PCD two weeks ago, temps were below freezing in the mountains after/before dark .. and still in low 40s midday northwest of Knoxville. Years ago, a friend and I encountered below-freezing temps and heavy frost along the Cherohala in early April on our way to a 1-day Performance Center driving school.

I live in Chicago and have my summers put back on around March 31. I led a caravan with some great people from Chicago to Greenville on April 9, 2021 for MX1 and it was fine. Planning to do the same for 2022 if you are interested but on April 7, 2022.

Yes, I would be interested. How close is Greenville to PCD?

BMW Performance Center and BMW CCA Headquarters are in Greer, South Carolina. I tagged the April 2021 caravan Greenville for the preferred hotel and final destination.

I usually switch back to summers at the end of March. While there is a chance of snow, the chance of accumulating snow is almost zero. Plus, you're only going south from there. If you take your winters on the Tail of the Dragon in 70 degree weather, they'll be done.
