I live in northern Indiana and drive my f80 year round and it does fine in the snow with snow tires. I mean AWD would be nice but the notion it's required in harsh climates is ridiculous. The ground clearance is the limiting factor and always will be.

That said the hybrid awd from a performance standpoint is enticing. I'll probably keep my f80 long term as my 6mt rwd m car and consider the awd auto next gen comp pack when it comes and keep both.

"As for timeline - Flasch says the G80 M3 will debut towards the end of 2020 and begin production in 2021."

Wow. I thought we were much closer than that.

I did too. This sorta implies something like an 03/2021 SOP which would be typical, and keeps the car on essentially the 7 year timeline since the F80 SOP, at least for USA cars. I'm figuring late 04/2021 they'll be available here at this point, so ~17 months away.

I don't really understand this. My 440i is putting down similar power to the F80 and I have no issues. Even the S550 guys come with almost 500hp stock and seem to make do. The only difference I can tell is BMW is hell bent on squeezing 20" wheels and rubber band tires. Swap the rears on the G80 to at least 19s and let the proper tires do the work.

We don't know exactly what the car is going to look like yet though. We know it'll have larger grills, but that doesn't mean it'll look exactly like the 4 series concept. Small, nuanced differences in the design can do quite a bit to change the look.

I wanted Xdrive and 6MT. Seems to me, that every other interview says something different, I will wait until we know for sure, but these quotes can be contradicted with other quotes.

I'm guessing you mean your 440 is putting stock F80 power? With even a light tune the F80 start pushing 500+ hp, that's when traction is much more of an issue. S550? You're talking about 1000+ lbs of weight, I'm sure that helps with keep the rubber to the ground.

yes, i hear this a lot with stock M4s. I have a coworker that claims his spins through 4th gear I guess I can understand tuned, but wider stickier tires are the solution.

And the S550 (mustang) is no where near 1000lbs. They're pretty much the same as a 4 series.

If the G80 LCI gets rid of that odd headlight design and the rear end becomes more "bmw" than the 6MT model will definitely be an option for me provided the M2CS doesn't steal my heart (or if I can afford the new Cayman GT4)

The previous generation of the M5 and M6 were available with a 423kw/575ps and 680nm/502lbft.

We know the top engine spec at launch will be 375kw/510ps and 600nm/442lbft.

There is no mechanical limitations with that 6MT BMW already has

Uh, you might be looking at some marketing material. The real curb weight of the F90 M5 is closer to 4400 lbs. Maybe 4300. Even the M340i RWD model weighs about 3900 lbs. The M340xi already weighs about 4000 lbs. The AWD M3 will likely weigh at least 4000 lbs. It should satisfy the people who just want to show off and drag race at the stoplight, though.

It makes complete sense for the manual M3 to be RWD only. AWD sales would be way too low.

My stock M3 6MT is extremely difficult to launch quickly. Obviously a tuned version would be worse. My guess is the M specific suspension (compared to your 440) is not ideal for getting hard, clean, launches. I even had 275/295 tires and regardless of all of this "throttle control" talk, this is a hard car to get off quickly, at least in the 6MT.

That was my guess as well. Your cars must come with more camber from the factory. But again, I'd say coilovers and an alignment should be a significant help. But I'm also on 18s and run 32psi in the tires year around. Honestly it's a challenge to even get the traction light to flash.

Don't forget the F90 gained AWD and lost weight from the previous generation. So getting AWD doesn't mean it'll weigh more (although it likely will).

Either way, I seriously doubt the G80 xdrive weighs 4000 pounds.

Being selfish, for me this news sucks! I was looking forward to a 6 speed AWD all duty car. I live in Tahoe and hate parking my F80 for 5-6 months.

My M5 Competition fully loaded, with sunroof, is 4188 lbs. put the carbon roof instead and there you go a bit above 4,000 lbs

Interesting, did you put it on the scale?

Bmwusa.com has both the M5C and M5 at 4370 lbs curb weight.

Also considering the F8x is 150lbs lighter than a RWD F3x. If the AWD has too much of a penalty, they'll just use more aluminum suspension parts and composite body panels. Maybe they'll even surprise us with some new tech.
