I live in northern Indiana and drive my f80 year round and it does fine in the snow with snow tires. I mean AWD would be nice but the notion it's required in harsh climates is ridiculous. The ground clearance is the limiting factor and always will be.
That said the hybrid awd from a performance standpoint is enticing. I'll probably keep my f80 long term as my 6mt rwd m car and consider the awd auto next gen comp pack when it comes and keep both.

"As for timeline Flasch says the G80 M3 will debut towards the end of 2020 and begin production in 2021."
Wow. I thought we were much closer than that.

I did too. This sorta implies something like an 03/2021 SOP which would be typical, and keeps the car on essentially the 7 year timeline since the F80 SOP, at least for USA cars. I'm figuring late 04/2021 they'll be available here at this point, so ~17 months away.

We don't know exactly what the car is going to look like yet though. We know it'll have larger grills, but that doesn't mean it'll look exactly like the 4 series concept. Small, nuanced differences in the design can do quite a bit to change the look.

And the S550 (mustang) is no where near 1000lbs. They're pretty much the same as a 4 series.

If the G80 LCI gets rid of that odd headlight design and the rear end becomes more "bmw" than the 6MT model will definitely be an option for me provided the M2CS doesn't steal my heart (or if I can afford the new Cayman GT4)

We know the top engine spec at launch will be 375kw/510ps and 600nm/442lbft. There is no mechanical limitations with that 6MT BMW already has

Uh, you might be looking at some marketing material. The real curb weight of the F90 M5 is closer to 4400 lbs. Maybe 4300. Even the M340i RWD model weighs about 3900 lbs. The M340xi already weighs about 4000 lbs. The AWD M3 will likely weigh at least 4000 lbs. It should satisfy the people who just want to show off and drag race at the stoplight, though.
It makes complete sense for the manual M3 to be RWD only. AWD sales would be way too low.

My stock M3 6MT is extremely difficult to launch quickly. Obviously a tuned version would be worse. My guess is the M specific suspension (compared to your 440) is not ideal for getting hard, clean, launches. I even had 275/295 tires and regardless of all of this "throttle control" talk, this is a hard car to get off quickly, at least in the 6MT.

Either way, I seriously doubt the G80 xdrive weighs 4000 pounds.

Being selfish, for me this news sucks! I was looking forward to a 6 speed AWD all duty car. I live in Tahoe and hate parking my F80 for 56 months.

Also considering the F8x is 150lbs lighter than a RWD F3x. If the AWD has too much of a penalty, they'll just use more aluminum suspension parts and composite body panels. Maybe they'll even surprise us with some new tech.
