Going back to the original context though if the M3 is seen as better looking than the M4 due to it’s larger wheel arch flares, is sales numbers a good measure? I’m not sure it is, the practicality of the sedan also play a role.

Well, that depends on how you look at it. If something sells more than something else for whatever the reason, is it safe to say that the item/thing that sold the most is the more popular/desired item/thing? On the other hand, someone might actually like the look of the M4 better, but needs the extra doors for practicality reasons so they go with the M3.

Exactly and the statement was made in the context of a disappointment of small G82 wheel arches and attributed a perceived F80 popularity over the F82 to prove his point that large wheel arches are more effective than a wide body and low roofline to appeal to buyers.

I think there is some truth to this even if I personally prefer the latter. Obviously a narrow body with large wheel arches is preferable to just a standard 3 series body with small wheel arch flares.

Puih that got caught complicated

.....but how do we know that the fenders are actually "weak" when we haven't even seen the car in its entirety?!?

No mention so far that the S58 will be running 48V mild hybrid tech which I find surprising for products debuting in 2020.

nothing can save the front- from these photos the fenders look the same as a base G80 4 series car. Just like how the m4 and 428i have pretty much the same rear fenders. I am not looking forward to what bmw is doing for M in the future looks wise

For my money, the rear arches on the F80 look way better than the F82's, but overall the F82 is a very fine looking car.

Judging by the amount of F82's available on autotrader in the uk, it has outsold the saloon by 3.6 to 1 !!

I'm guessing this is the pre-production model.

It's not a great effort compared to E92 M3 or even F82 M4.

To me, from this angle, the rear looks wider than F82 M4 (way wider than e92 M3). E92 had pronounced flares, similar to F80, while F82 had a bulbous flare that was less pronounced but still made the entire rear of the car look low and wide.. this continues that trend of the bulbous rear but the transition from door to rear quarter, to me, looks more pronounced than F82. From the back you probably won't get the same effect as you would from F80 because once the rear of this M4 gets wide it stays pretty wide.

Front fenders are very weak. You need wider front tires to really push it to the limit.

Stock E92 can accommodate 285/30/18 square so I wouldn't call it too shabby. I'm not sure about F82 but I've heard from the local indy that they had to pull the front to fit bigger tires.

You do realize that there is extra body cladding designed to hide the actual contours, right?

An M4 is noticeably wider than a base 4 Series, but because a base 4-Series is already wider than a base 3-Series (...and the M3's haunches are designed differently), you notice it more on the M3 despite both cars being about 74" wide.

That and the swirls are very effective in hiding contours already. We know that there is a significant grove in the hood running up some distance from the kidneys for example, that is pretty much impossible to see with the camo.

To me, it looks exactly the same as 4 series. Just like the M8, they seem to be getting lazier with body work.

M6 really might have been the last of M car to incorporate wide body coupe. There is zero width difference between M and non-M just like M850i and M8.

You don't know the dimensions of the new car, so how can you claim there's no width difference? Maybe it's a poor eyesight issue since an extra 2" of width between a 428i and an M4 goes unnoticed to you.

I am talking about the new 4 series and G82 M4.

The current M4 has a noticeable front wide body vs. 4 series.

I am speculating from the spy shots taken at a similar angle. You would also notice that there is barely a difference if at all.

However it looks like earlier test models have widebody so hope isn’t all lost. I just hope they don’t water down like the rest of their M line ups.

...but you don't know the dimensions of the new 4/M4, so how can you make any definitive statements at this point? ....and why would you be referring to the width of a base 4-Series in a G82 thread?

I’m saying there isn’t enough difference between the two, at least from the latest spy shots.

My eyesight is just fine. This is all just a speculation, why so stingy?

**My statement regarding zero difference might have been confusing so I will reiterate.

There is literally 5mm width difference in M850i and M8 coupe; thus it is fair to say zero difference. Looking at the spy photo, I can’t help but think BMW is following this trend with the new M4. I hope they don’t, but it seems to be the case.

The M850i is a wide car, if the new 4 series is that much wider than the G20 that it is wide enough to accommodate the G8X hardware and track I see little problem with a minimal difference in width between the 4 and M4.

From the G80’s pronounced wheel arch flares we know for sure that the G8X track is a lot wider than the G20’s.

If the G22 will have a track closer to the G8X rather than the G20 that’s a plus for the G22 not a minus for the G82.

Exactly! ...and with regards to your final statement, that would fall perfectly in line with the F3X vs F8X. The F32 is closer in width/track to the F8X than the F30 is. That's why the F8X is only 2" wider than the F32 coupe, but it is 3" wider than the F30 sedan. So if a similar approach holds true for the G20/22 vs G8X, it will be a similar approach to what BMW took with the previous generation cars.
