First off, I never said the word performance. But... this picture is right off their website, doofus.

Glad you're ok!

It might be a pain laying down the cash for winter tires, but you got do it. I've seen this happen to too many others with summer tires in the winter before.

We don't even know any details about the crash other than what the OP stated about hitting black ice. We don't know if he was turning, the speed he was driving, if he was distracted, etc... He clearly knows he F'd up. And the most likely reason he went out of control is due to too much gas pedal at the wrong time. Same reason a hundred other idots spin out every day. All these cry baby nannies bitching about their insurance premiums... Saying that if you can afford the car, you can afford the winter tires! Well, guess what? If you can afford the car, you can afford your insurance premiums. Let me guess, on the first warm day of the year you like to stand on your front lawn and yell "slow down" to all the cars driving past your house. People take risk in these cars all the time. OP took a risk and paid the price. Go get a spiced latte and settle down.

But this was of your own doing and foreseeable a mile away, and I’m sharing this as a cautionary tale for others who think the same way - DO NOT ever use summer high performance tires at less than 45 degrees. They become less capable at the 55-60 degree mark downwards if you care about max performance. Yours in not the first car in this situation because of tires, and unfortunately, unlikely to be the last.

I learnt this almost the same way as you where I nearly spun out my 435i in 2016-17 on a sweeping highway on ramp in cold, wet conditions on summer tires. I was able to rapidly correct and come to a stop without any damage. Ever since that day I always, always ensure I have the right tires installed for the conditions. Even if it isn’t super cold in someone’s area, the PS4S sucks cutting through water on wet roads. So if you see a lot of rain seasonally, think about that.

It’s not worth losing a $100K car or something infinitely more precious - your passenger and your lives / health - over $1.5K to 2K in tires. All the moronic justifications a select few people on this forum spread as gospel to others (who may not even be HPDE trained drivers) is astonishing. For something so consequential. All the “I’ve driven like this for 30 years” is not helping others!

Germany, which seems to be the only country with collective intelligence on automotive discipline and safety, legally requires everyone to use snow tires in winter (“October to Easter”).

And we’re talking about basic safety. Not even people like us driving high-performance cars. Some owners really save a little coin to drive their M3/M4 slower than a Camry for 4-5 months a year? (Camry’s have thinner all-season tires which are far better; but still not the best)
Here in quebec, winter tires are mandatory from december 1st to march 15th.

Pretty much same weather as NY state...

Not sure why would anybody drive under such condition with performance summer tires on. Huge risk for nothing...

I'm glad nobody was hurt but dam...it's the logic of a 5-year-old child here...

Yes. Not only that, but they’re getting worse performance out of the car.

I am in the UK and switch to winters each year having been caught out in previous cars. However as original poster said this is rare in Uk and when it snows hard you can be stuck on motorways overnight because of this! Remember the M11 ….

Yes thanks for confirming this, the stories of people being stuck all night on a gridlocked motorway are not uncommon here in GB.
You’ll be safe from the drama queen on this thread now you’ve got winters, lucky for you.
He’s like a man possessed trolling me because I upset him with the reality of how we drive in this country.
Haven’t slept properly, he’s really got to me…

You are correct based on what they now call lived experience 😀. That’s how it is in the uk so ignore.

4. Amazingly, there are other people on this forum who also have no idea that summer and winter tires are completely different.
4. Some people are still defending the idiocracy of speeding with no traction tires in the winter on black ice by saying they have been doing it for years without problems.
5. Many people on this forum are offering "tough love" and telling OP to get winter tires or don't drive in the winter. They have used words like "idiot" and "common sense" to drive the point home, like a loving parent would, so OP doesn't kill himself or others.

Folks, summer tires are like bowling shoes and winter tires are like hiking boots. What idiot would not use common sense and go hiking with bowling shoes?

Black ice is awful and can affect anyone. But for Pete's sake (whoever Pete is), drive safely and use the proper equipment. Or don't drive!

I believe I have the solution to this thread! Folks! DON'T DRIVE, Your High-Performance vehicle in the Winter Months! Park it in the Garage!

You sir, are an ass clown. Go on BMW's website and look at the specifications. Or don't. Who cares.

So I got a new set of Pilot Sports and was told it wouldn’t make a difference and he was exactly right, I was slipping and sliding leaving Discount Tire. Pissed me off BMW will send an AWD to Alpina let them put 21s on a car and I cannot even drive it in winter. I do so much better in my 911 with All Seasons it’s RWD also. Moral of the story just park the next one in cold temps or invest in proper tires, it sucks to see this. Sorry bro glad u ok.
There are 20 different sizes of 21” Michelin PS ALL SEASONS alone available at the Tire Rack rn. Maybe look for a different tire shop… or worst case get some 20’s for your winter tires.

Same thing happened to me on Jan 6th in my S4, in CT. Never put on winters, and caught a patch of black ice. Totaled car!

After my X3M was stolen in July! Tough stretch…

No pity for Op for using summer tire in winter. But the state should enforce peoples to use winter tires like other Canada states.
