Whats everyone's best gas mileage with their m3? I'm used to filling up like once every two weeks or so… I get like 12 mpg with the x5 especially when I'm having fun with it!

tbh, I have no idea, never checked actually, but I'm at the gas station 1 or 2 times per week...but it's my daily and driving a lot.

Pretty horrendous. Which is to be expected, and shouldn’t surprise anyone. Particularly in sport and sport plus, you can basically watch the gas needle move in real time (and I’m not exaggerating).
I regularly make a 60-65 mile round trip, mix of highway and awesome back roads. Each round trip drops the needle approximately a quarter of a tank. It’s as bad (I think it’s actually worse) than my c7 z06, where at least cruising on the highway seems to make up for the terrible non-highway mpg. When I made the mistake of calculating dollars-per-trip with gas prices where they are, I realized it was a terrible idea to do that math, and I should just keep swiping my card at the pump and loving every minute behind the wheel. You will be at the pump. A lot. In sport plus, it’s pretty absurd actually. |

That’s the outlook you need with this car, and others like it. Nobody should buy this car if they aren’t willing to fuel and maintain it. Nor should anyone be surprised that an engine putting out this much power and torque per liter is thirsty.

Those little cans are for lawn equipment and roadside emergencies, in my view. And taking race fuel to the track, for non street cars. (Fond memories of going to the speed shop with my dad as a little kid to get leaded race fuel for the purpose-built race cars.) |

When in auto mode, the setting that impacts gas mileage the most is the drive mode (D1, D2, D3) and of course how fast you drive and accelerate. In sequential mode, it's all about how you drive. Am I wrong?

My G80 is a manual. And I can tell you that changing the engine mode in my car, even just on the highway cruising, changes the rate of fuel consumption. And it appears to do so materially. I also found this in my 2020 M2C. |

"The M Engine Dynamics Control affects the response of the vehicle to accelerator pedal movement." In highway cruising, what would be the purpose of changing the rate of fuel consumption, as you say? You're cruising, why on earth wouldn't you want the best fuel economy possible? My F80 was the same. What older M cars are you referring to?

I just read an interesting thread (now that you’ve got me scratching my head on this) from the 2000s, discussing this same issue. There, it seems that the consensus was that pressing the sport button does increase fuel consumption, but only because it changes driving habit. And that a robot driving both cars would see equal consumption. Who knows. But what I do know is that when I’m on the highway cruising, I switch back to the efficient/comfort mode often, because for whatever reason, it seems to save me money! |

Don't even get me started on that stupid sound control button! Yes, it changes how loud the exhaust sounds, but is that natural or ASD, or both? Who knows?!?

I honestly haven't paid attention at all since getting the car. I fill up about ever 1.5-2 weeks as this point but my daily mileage is fairly low.
I drive with every setting in Sport for the time being and will likely switch regularly between Sport/Sport+ on all settings after break-in service is complete this Friday. I would also expect my MPGs to go down after the break-in service is done as then I definitely be looking to enjoy the full RPM range. It's been hard to behave the last 1,000 miles. I do expect my smiles per gallon will increase though.

Not sure why all the hate when someone asks about gas mileage here. Nothing wrong with driving a performance car and wanting to reduce your carbon footprint or # of trips to the pump.
That being said, I am amazed at how efficient this beast is. I mean any car will drink gas if you flog it. e.g. famously see But I usually get 20+ mpg on average with mixed driving when I am not on it all the time. This is amazing for a car with this much power. It even gets slightly better gas mileage than my previous F30 340 under comparable driving conditions. Caveats apply of course (no 2 people have the same driving conditions/behavior/etc so take lots of salt with any mpg numbers ppl post)

Prior gen got better gas mileage than a Prius (if driving like a Prius driver). One of my favorite videos!

I fill up the tank almost once a week, I can stretch it out to two weeks if I'm not driving too far and not being a hooligan. I generally get 23mpg.
I will say when I was testing launch control back to back I went through half a fuel tank in no time. Basically your gas mileage will depend on your driving habits. |
