We can all agree that most of the forum members here are enthusiasts and have owned M cars for years. Older generations that have experienced the tradition of regular M cars with regular dash may never get it as you said. Younger generations consider minimalistic/simple/futuristic design like the id8 more aesthetically advanced/interesting over the id7 because they are used to technological improvements throughout their lifetime.

What I am saying is that BMW is not targeting older/conservative enthusiasts with their new design. They are trying to appeal to the younger generations.

They don't care if older generations move on to manufacturers that don't change their design much like Porsche because there is already a trend that older people move on to buy a Porsche later on anyway.
Again it's an ugly and cheap design

This has nothing to do with young vs old.

There are things can be done in terms of HMI. A free form screen can flow to the dash much better, a better center curved screen also fits better to human interaction.

Whether you like it or not Human has strong preference for symmetry perception.

That is why ID8 is a disaster from HMI perspective.

Like I said, you may never get it because BMW is not targeting you. They are targeting those that want change even if its radical or unpopular aka ugly in your standards. Most BMW enthusiasts will buy the car regardless if they don't like the design. Non enthusiasts won't buy if there isn't any change. I agree with maverick above that BMW could've done a better job with the change like maybe putting a dash over the big screen but change was needed to stay competitive. Id7 was getting old

The leaked/spy pictures of the M2 show the ID8 large screen. It's going to be in all BMW's at some point I bet.

Not sure what to think…

I have seen the new screen in a iX at the dealership and it's fair to say that it looks very very odd and weirdly integrated… even on an electric device-on-wheels like the iX.

I am afraid it's going to look even weirder in a sports sedan/coupe.

I have no allocation yet, but I'll make sure to drop to the dealership to see how this looks on another vehicle before deciding to pull the plug on my order.

It's not about target. It just ugly, in-cohesive design.

Simply put its limited by BMW lack of internal know how on how to properly design a display.

Simply put it- it's an outdated design from lack of technical know how to innovate.

Size doesn't mean squat

Yet it's a direction alot of performance car makers are moving towards. Although it's not one piece, here's the new C8 dash display for instance....

Right now, thankfully the new hotness doesn't make me feel that way. Now, if it got OLED tail lights or a B&W option...then I would be jealous.
I would love a B&W option!

The new C8 design is better.

1. You don't have the off center effect.
2. It's actually cohesive not as an after thought.

Look at this compare to BMW and EQS.

That looks infinitely better tho. I would take that setup in a heartbeat

And while BMWs is 'one piece', it's still 2 separate screens. There is a ton of wasted real estate in the gap between gauge cluster and infotainment screen

The 2023 M3 iD 8 dash looks a hell of a lot better than what the Ford Mustang Mach-E has....

Purposely designed that way so the steering wheel doesn't block usable info on the display....

Obviously, yes. But it just further highlights the lack of intention in the design.

That's my understanding currently. MY2024.

So get your order in now if you want it by next Christmas...I'm honestly debating on it myself. Just put the order in and if it comes in sooner, great; if later, well, as long as I get the last of the non-ID8-rectangular-double-screen versions I'll be happy.

Also important to note - these headunits are all made by Harman with the same base design and sold to OEMs who tweak them.

Vw, Volvo, ford , all harmam systems under the hood

Problem is the cheap supporting piece on the side that bmw miscalculated, what an eyesore from the passenger seat.
It could have been a clean cool curvy floating screen if they could pull it off.

Personally, I like the "tacked on" aesthetic. I don't think it's better than the integrated look of the F80 and current G80, but I don't think it's necessarily worse either. It's just very different.

Funny, I'm in my 40's and not getting younger. A lot of people my age tend to favor what is familiar and traditional. Hell, I love the 90's aesthetic in cars. Seeing a cherry condition 90's car is nostalgic. But those cars belong in the 90's. Those will never change. They are cemented in our memories.

Why would I want new cars to be more like current or old cars? Why do I need an analog speedometer? I've been seeing the same type of instrument cluster for more than 25 years. I want to look forward. Give me screens and bold unorthodox design. Go wild. By the time I die I want to see shit that makes no sense to me because it's exciting. Like the concept cars that promised these stunningly unrealistic interiors, I want to start seeing that cool stuff in an everyday car.

I really don't understand the need for the world to go by MY pace. I want a new experience, I want to be surprised. I want to feel like I'm traveling into the future and see as far into it as I can. I've already lived the past.

Best case scenario, when I retire, I want an analog M car or Porsche for the nostalgia, and the most advanced batshit crazy modern car on the market. Yin and Yang.

If you don't want analog, feel free to purchase a tesla.
I have one too on the days I don't want analog.
On the days I do , I'd like to have a brand new ///M with the option.

Otherwise everything will start to feel like a tesla or some sort of EV
