Does anyone else find the suspension more comfortable in Sport mode?
I find that when the car is in Sport mode, the ride is relatively firm but doesn't feel harsh, even on crappy pavement. You still feel the bumps but the suspension does a good job taking the edge off. In Comfort mode, the suspension does not get any softer...it just becomes bouncier. As a result, you feel like you are crashing over bumps. This is particularly noticeable when going over speed bumps. I find myself always driving in Sport mode. Has anyone else noticed this?

I notice this sometimes especially on the interstate and driving across overpasses.

The default mode on F80 was in sport mode wonder it's the same set up in G80.

How does the suspension become bouncier without becoming softer. I drive around in comfort 99% of the time but I'm going to try this out.

In comfort mode due to the rebound adjuster springs feel more bouncy. It doesn't have enough rebound dampening. So especially on a bumpier road car feels more bouncy due to lack of rebound dampening. Picture a spring without a shock. If there was no shock the spring will bounce forever. Shocks control the rebound just like they control the bump(stifness). In efficient mode the bump and especially rebound dampening seems low especially for bumpy roads. I think thats what you are feeling.

Tried this today. Ya’ll are smoking some GOOD stuff. I don’t know what kind of roads you are testing this on but tried this morning, 55 MPH driving straight on a marginal concrete road (new, poorly constructed). Putting suspension in sport, instantly less comfortable, more jiggly ride.

You’d love the BMW M Performance HAS suspension then. It, on comfort, is perfect. Flat with little roll or squat but still compliant and non-jarring. When you want jarring you just pop it in sport plus 🤣

Ditto. With the M spring kit the ride settings are firm, solid, harsh

This sounds disturbingly like the situation with my 2014 F34 (fixed by flashing Dinan Shockware). Pretty bummed to read that it's a potential issue with a $90K M3.

I find the ride in comfort to be pleasant and compliant. Even during spirited driving I don’t find the car to be unsettled.
Sport mode is really well damped and works great for me on the track. Sport plus is a little too stiff my local tracks, but I imagine it’s perfect on a new track surface. I don’t love the ride height of the stock suspension, but it performs so well for me that I can’t bring myself to change it. I’ve messed with my previous cars too much searching for the best parked look and it ended up ruining the driving experience for me |

Sorry, no. I find the ride stiffer in Sport mode. For the smoothest ride I find Comfort the best.

Same. Must be the specific type of terrain OP experiences. I find sport more firm and hoppy on non-uniform surfaces and leave the setup in comfort most of the time ... unless it's a windy road with smooth road surfaces.

This is about ‘primary’ ride and ‘secondary’ ride. The former is about how undulating the surface is and the latter about how rough the surface, either continuously, like a worn concrete surface, or discretely, like holes, joints, etc. On an undulating surface, with a lot of primary ride input, comfort likely will feel somewhat underdamped - either ‘floaty’ or ‘bouncy’. Comfort, however, feels very good on a road with low primary input but a lot of secondary input. Sport feels great when there is a lot of primary input as it will feel more planted, but it will transmit a lot of secondary input and may feel harsh on such a surface. Where you live and the type of roads that are prevalent will almost certainly determine whether comfort or sport is preferred for ‘normal’ driving. FYI - overall, I think the spring/damper settings in the G8X are much better than the F8X in all modes…

The G80 is much more resolved. It’s not soft. But the damping is much more sophisticated. Don’t have any issues and it deals with bumps extremely well. |
