Because some 8.0 units will be software updated to 8.5.

If 8.0 is almost similar to 8.5 (minor HW difference and SW to be backward compatible), it might be yet another reason to roll it out for all platforms even if that specific platform had 8.0 just for a few years.

I'm just giving you shit man, as long as you like it, that's all that matters. I'm not a fan from what I've seen so far but they always look better in person. I'm sure the 5 is no different and that interior is pretty sweet.

I actually think the G80 interior with the curved screen looks not outdated at all, compared to this. It lacks A/C buttons and the square wheel but is cleaner and the main elements are there.

i doubt g8x will get ID8.5, they will have to write a specific M version for what is a .5 gap release before ID9. Id bet more on sticking with ID8 or going to ID9 for the LCI

Interesting. Previous reports have said that iDrive 9 was a new UI running on a totally different HW platform (Android Automotive if memory serves), whereas 8.5 was a reskinned UI made to look like 9, but running on the existing hardware platform.

Some older id8 units won't be able to run it, march 2023 and newer will, but even still thats for the ix/i4. Bmw never mentioned g20/80 will get it, just other cars.

Is there a way to differentiate the head unit pre vs post 03/2023 in the settings that we know of? I have an early March build and I don't expect the upgrade but I'm curious never-the-less.
