inconsistent rattle in rear of car

Took delivery of my M3Cx at the beginning of the year. I live in the Midwest so rattles from ice are common, which I assumed was what I was hearing. Clearly I was wrong, it has warmed up and I still get an intermittent rattle. It’s definitely coming from the back seat somewhere, but some days it is very apparent and non stop on my 30 min commute, others days off and on, some days non existent. It doesn’t seem to matter on temperature. I have pushed on everything I can think of back there to make sure it’s not just something that’s loose. It doesn’t seem to make a difference. Any ideas on other things to check (nothing in the trunk) or areas that commonly rattle?

It's the rear shelf making this noise. My 22 has it and once I put the valve controller on, it exasperated it. I'm scheduling a appointment next week to have them install some felt and it should fix it. My friend is a tech for bmw and last weekend he figured out by riding in the back.

That's what mine was, I got some foam and put some underneath, stopped the vibration and rattle

That's what I figured it was, hoping to avoid a visit into the dealership though

Underneath the entire shelf? Can I pull the whole thing up pretty easily?

My 22 M4 has the same rattle you describe. Mine is coming from the rear passenger side panel. I live in the Midwest too and i do notice it on very cold days. I assume it’s from something shrinking that expands when warmer when it goes away. It’s one of the multiple rattles I have, some are from the sunroof. I’m terrified to have the dealer take my car apart to find a rattle that I’m sure will be there or worse after. I blame our crappy roads, not BMW. But they do drive me a little crazy.

I have a G82 and have the same rattle. What do you mean it’s the “shelf?” I want to try and avoid going to the dealership to fix it. Thanks

It's the panel right behind the back seats that has the 2 speakers. If you knock on it, you can hear how hollow it is. When you hit bumps or drone it almost vibrates and rattles. I went to lowes and got that expanding foam tape for windows. If you stick your hand where the panel meets the window, there is space underneath the panel, and I put 3 small pieces of it to damper it. I hope this helps, if not I can try to take some pics.

I’ll climb back there and give it a look, was busy messing with BimmerCode last night and didn’t get around to it, plus needed some daylight. Thanks for the tip!

Mine was a fuel line and I had to take it back 2 times to get fixed correctly. It was the most annoying sound ever. I’d send a pic but dealer has a pic and showed it to me. I swear I almost sold the car I was so pisst.

Yeah if you have a pic that’d be helpful, in case it’s not the back shelf I can have them start by checking that

This is the shelf I'm referring to, it's under where the circle is, the space under there

the gap under the shelf is pretty large actually.. im about to buy some thick foam to put under it to push against the shelf to see if this will fix the rattle.

I'm trying to figure out what a noise is on the rear passenger side. It sounded like a suspension noise, but the dealership was unable to diagnose it and couldn't find anything mechanically wrong. I will have to see if this is the source of it. In my case, temperature has no impact on it. Going over small joints in the road will make it happen and it almost sounds like a slapping or knocking noise.

Does it go away if you lightly apply some brake? I get a rattle in the rear when driving over lane dots that goes silent when I barely touch the brakes that I'm trying to diagnose.

I took my car to the dealership in March and let them fix it. Since then I have not heard any noise.

Braking or accelerating doesn't impact it. I'm going to have friend drive it for me sometime while I'm in the back seat to try to pin point it.

I had it at the dealership yesterday and they focused on the suspension. The tech heard it almost immediately when we went for a ride. I couldn't leave it with them so I'm scheduling a follow-up to have them investigate further unless I find it before then.

Interesting, since I lowered my car, I'm getting a noise from right rear and it's MSS springs.
