If you want the car find a waitlist under 10 at least. Preferably under 5 ppl.

If not, I would say go the markup route if you are a motivated buyer.
Got it, the timeline he quoted fit for my current needs, but I guess I should check in after a month or two and see where I stand in line? I'm assuming some ppl drop out too sometimes.

So the opportunity costs are increased interest rate plus reduced value of your current car vs. buying a car now with a markup. I would call around and at least find a shorter list…..

Full disclosure, I am in a similar boat for a GT3 and am not willing to pay anything above MSRP, therefore I am not expecting it for quite some time.

Also, 3,000 as a down payment is excessive IMHO.
Okay I'll call around and see what their waitlists are looking like.
Got 4 other BMW dealers in NC that aren't too far away.
Ah, 3,000 I thought was excessive too, but wasn't sure if that was the norm..

I'd shop around if I were you. Sorry if I'm being a wet blanket here, but that's the way it is these days.
Right, I think he mentioned 5allos per mo.
Hmm, even if it would come Jan '24, would it still be a '23 model, or would it have to be bumped to a '24 model and leave me paying a bit more somewhere? Never did an order like this so still figuring it out!

The sound of a '23M3 just has a nice ring.
But he's not getting 5/month, almost nobody is, even the biggest dealers. Or he may get 5 one month, then 0 the next.

I would take it with a grain of salt.

Its highly unlikely that a dealer is receiving five G80 allocations (let alone one) every month consistently. I came across several M certified dealers who did not receive a single allocation even for 4 months.

Thanks everyone for the replies, very helpful! I called another dealer and explained the story. He thought 51 was communicated incorrectly. Stated that his dealer has 8 M3s on the list with no more allocations. With the same timeframe, also stated that maybe that's total orders overall at that dealer.

Called back my ordered dealer, and he mentioned that yes, 50 BMW M3s ahead of me, whew... he mentioned that there is a chance that it could hit the 12/14months as BMW said they would be ramping up the production for the 2023 models... I'll check other dealers, or my ordered dealer in a few months.

Thanks all!

You must not really be serious about getting this car settling for 50 ahead of you.

You're right, I wonder if there would be any benefit to get on another waitlist. I'll do more digging tomorrow. Thanks for the input!

Your dealer should be able to provide how many M3's allocations are provided each month. It had been about 350/month [US], which is about one per dealership. Dealership allocations are hit or miss; my dealership is probably on the lower end of M3 sales, so I started at #4 in Aug 21 and didn't receive an allocation until Jan 22. Once an allocation is received, your build week may change [several time, perhaps] and you are at the mercy of BMW. It has almost been a year since placing my order and my car is finally on its way from VPC…my dealership did however request BMW FS to honor January Programs and it was approved…

The process is painstaking, but what can one do but be patient?

Godspeed.

Thanks for the insights!
So I called back the original dealer and talked to the sales manager that also confirmed 51st in line. I think how they slice it, is that they combine M3 Base, M3 Comp, M3 Comp Xdrive all into a giant list. Other dealers have lists per Base/comp/Xdr.

Depending on allocation they can alter they model per who's up next on the list. He said they're one of the biggest M dealers in the U.S so they are getting things moved at a quicker pace than other dealers.

I called a few other dealers that had $2K, and $1K refundable deposit
And I would be 4th or 6th in line with the same Aug/Sept or earlier timeframe.
I'm going to just get on another wait list now.

Glad I asked and received feedback on here, thanks again!

They're right though, an allocation for G80 can be for all three, there are not separate allocations for base, Comp, and Comp xDrive. Same with G82.

firetyphoon1, I'm in Charlotte as well and didn't even bother around here, lol. Now I want a base M4 which is easier than the M3, but was able to find a dealer where I am 4th in line for M4 and the other 3 ahead of me are competition models (not sure if the allocation is different). Got it signed at MSRP. They had a bunch of dealer "extras" added but the SA pointed out to me w/o even asking that I just needed to cross it out if I didn't want them.

I was prepared to even look out of state. I am going to do performance center delivery anyway.

Ah, okay good so you know it's crazy out here!
Where'd you end up going? I ended up going to Crown in Greensboro and I'm 4th in line for the M3Base. They also saved me $1,400 worth of "extras" that Charlotte added in, nitro, tint, door guard, and higher dealer fees. I didn't know you could cross em' out, good to know.

So my dealership got an allocation for me for a M3 Competition with individual color with MSRP coming out to $86845. They are offering it to me at a lease payment of $1195/month with $8000 total drive off. This will be at 12000 miles per year. Residual they gave me is 59.5% and MF is .00230.

I asked them to see if we could lower the drive off amount and lower the MF but they basically said they won't budge on anything other than lowering the drive off but at a higher monthly.

I understand where the market is right now but these numbers seem crazy as I got my current m850i lease right when COVID started for $5k drive off and 12000 miles per year at $1150/month.

I live in Maryland but ended up ordering with Crown as well, as they had zero folks in the queue when I called around (extensively) back in February, and sure enough I got the next allocation a couple weeks later. I just did the paperwork yesterday with a third-party notary who came to my house, and I'll be taking delivery at the Performance Center next week. Never had to step foot in the dealership. They've been straight shooters to deal with, no complaints. Good luck.

I know nobody is bragging, but I am curious about this as well.

The $8k drive off someone shared was crazy imo.

Had placed an order back in February and was #1 on the list until this weekend when an allocation finally came through .. not a low volume dealer either. Going Individual color with carbon buckets and exterior.

Anyone know how long it should stay at status "Order Received" prior to getting a build slot? I'm surprised it's taken a few days, but given the option set, maybe it's good for me to learn patience early on here.
