Suspension Damage, dealer wants $41k

Long story short, my right rear wheel hit a curb, which caused suspension damage and the dealer wants $41k for the entire Job.

Everything has been approved by insurance thus far, other then the 95 hours of labor to replace the harness, which was ripped in the accident; the harness is only a 4k part, so a pushback on $15k+ of labor for this is understandable

Insurance is not too keen of the 95 hours for replacing the harness and I hope they realize that is what it will take to get the car back to new.

Did you say, "$41,000" as in thousand? What in the world? That doesn't even look like $4,100 worth the damage. Looks to me like they'd be better off totaling it at that price.

$41k? What the shit??

right! at first glance it does look like max 4k at dealer prices, a few suspension bits and the harness. I did hear some stories about the suspension being quite expensive to replace with the g80s but this is another level.

not sure if totaling the car is in the cards; I believe that is usually the case when the cost to fix the car is more than the value of the car; more likely they try to settle with a cash offer at a lesser rate vs what the dealer wants. altough I see your point, the insurance would likely prefer to total the car and hope to sell it as is for at least 50k, then pay 41k to fix it

at this point, I just want my car fixed and back on the road!

My car got totalled couple weeks back, it was borderline repairable according to insurance and I pushed to get it total. Mine was worse than yours. Control arms on all 4 wheels were bent, both headlights were gone, 3 wheels were damaged, one of the engine mount was ruined, all intercooler were destroyed, frame was damaged, both front and rear bumper were destroyed, wiring harnesses were torn. If insurance was pushing to repair my damage then chances seem slim to total yours.

Below are some pics. Anything marked in green needed to be replaced.

oh man, that is unfortunate. truly way worse than mine. glad it was totaled, as it will have never been the same, especially with the frame being damaged.

was the insurance payout enough for you to get into a new g80 M?

It was. They paid me more than I bought the car for.

Happy to hear. Btw, curious the insurance would obviously cover the sales tax on your new m3?

Did you consider getting something other than another m3 and if yes, do you think the insurance would’ve covered the sales tax on that?

The insurance included the sales tax on the payout. They paid me taxes based on what they thought the car was worth.

I couldn't find any other replacements so I went with an M3 again.

Oh wow, that’s really the best you could’ve hoped for with a totaled car. Insurance did the right thing; interesting how these payouts work.

Hope you get your new M soon!

Insurance approved the job, now a 3 week wait to get the body harness from Germany.

Dealer said the tire/wheel will be replaced too; I will request that they give me the old parts as well, as the old tire and wheel are fine and old wheel just needs a refinishing.

I wouldn’t be too keen on this either. The chances of them reworking this much wiring in the car without residual issues is effectively zero.

Personally, I’d be pushing to get a new car.

agreed, also wish they just totaled the car. having the body harness replaced is quite the intrusive job as quite a lot of things will need to taken off and put back on. insurance didn't even give me the option and just approved the estimated amount to fix the car. likely will be some sort of mild sounds emitted from the interior as a result

base one the photo you provided. which is not enough. I put it into ccc one. the reasonable insurance price should be around 26k.
but dealer have their "factory repair " procedure. which they can base on that to make a lot more money and insurance have to approve it.

since it's not out of your pockect, they will want to jack up the price and max out the insurance pay out. they might not do exactly what the estimate said. but that's the price for insurance.

the bulk of the repair is the labor to swap out the body harness, which is only a 4k-5k part, that job will involve 95 estimated hours and involves taking apart the car almost done to a shell.

& yes the factory Bmw repair procedures go way above and beyond, often times replacing perfectly good parts with new ones. I will try to get them to return my old wheel/tire at least.

& yes am quite thankful for insurance, although they gave a hard time approving the job... & just a word of caution when tracking this car, as this would not have been covered by standard insurance
