What do you think about the mirrors?

There has only been a little bit of talk about the mirrors. It has the extra top piece like previous M mirrors, but previous mirrors have been svelte and curvy where as these seem more straight and boxy. I haven't seen the car in person since September, but I remember noticing it. What do you all who have seen it in person think (or even those of you that haven't)? I suppose the car seems to have more straight lines than the previous generation so maybe they fit with it more? When I saw it in person I remember thinking I liked the previous ones better.

It's in-line with the current trend of BMW M. Look at the current M5, M8-they all have the more boxy design. So it makes sense that the G8X follows this design direction. I think it looks pretty good and aggressive.

tbh i dont really like the shape, too boxy and think its a bit bulky, looks better on a X5 than on a M3 tbh.

I'm not sure if the change has been function over form but I prefer the old style as it was more pleasing to the eye.

While the G8X styling has grown on me overall, the new mirrors seem big n' boxy.

I prefer the smoother look of the F8X mirrors.

dont quote me on this as i didnt own an F8X but i think those older m mirrors were known for being not very aerodynamic/creating some extra road noise. New mirrors have a similar vibe but it looks like they made them a little more functional.

There are few things I didn't like about G8X design, and the mirrors are one of them!

It's not that they are bad looking, they have that Batman vibe to it, but the problem is that they are just standard 4 series mirrors with added upper "spike"!

That is BMW's cost cutting measure, and they did it first on the F90 M5.
I didn't like that M5 mirrors, and in person they looked like an add on!
I haven't seen M3/4 in person, but its interpretation of the standard mirror is much better, at least on the photos.

On the flip side, that mirrors are more practical (bigger), and I hate poor visibility no matter how good they look, and wouldn't trade the looks for the practicality in that department.

I actually prefer the regular 4 mirrors. Always loved M mirrors but I think it's the fact that the top spike thing is so straight flat across that makes it look bad.

In gloss black they are a little mundane but to me the carbon fiber caps really show off a nice design. I've seen both in person and would not buy this car without the exterior carbon pack.

Agreed, the carbon fiber looks much better for some reason.

The gloss black looks like one big boxy piece, hard to discern the angles/shape of it.

I totally agree. I think it was done the new way for improved aerodynamics.

Improved aerodynamics brings a question to my mind. My trade in was a 2019 440i M Sport, and though I loved that car it had a noticeable wind whistle at speed on both the driver and passenger sides. Service attempted several times to find and fix this with no success. They assumed that it was due to less than perfect sealing of the windows, but could not find evidence of this, and eventually came to the conclusion that it was caused by the mirrors.

Fast forward to my new M4 Comp, and many miles of driving at 80 - 100mph. This thing is absolutely silent when it comes to wind noise. Perhaps the new mirrors have a function over form bias after all.

100% agree with this. My G20 had that whistle, and the G82 is silent.

I don't mind it but the design flares up instead of down (the wider part of the F80 mirror was the bottom of the mirror by contrast). I prefer the old mirrors but still thing these look great.

The mirrors contribute something like 1-3% of the total frontal area. It's impact to drag coefficient of the car should have negligible impact on track times and no impact on the road as a daily driver.

So the 'improved aerodynamics' explanation is a crock. The more likely explanation is for cost savings as someone already mentioned above, or simply just another new styling direction that many people aren't pleased with.

I have been driving the car for a day now and first thing I noticed is how big and bulky they are. Maybe it's the way I sit but haven't noticed it with any other of my bmw models

I've only seen it in person once back in September in a not super well lit room and remember thinking it looked large in a Dodge Charger kind of way. I'm holding full judgement until I can see it outside

IF/when I order, I'm going with body colored mirrors and trunk spoiler (..non-shadowline) and I'll be painting the side skirts, front splitters, etc. body colored as well.

Hey dude! I just ordered exactly that... Frozen dark grey “without exterior lines designation” - body colored mirrors and spoiler as well as chrome exhaust tips. I also asked them about removing the black painted side skirts, bumpers, but so far no answer from BMW! Frozen color will look extremely weird in my opinion with painted shiny side skirts... 😬

Mirrors design looks fine to me by the way...
