There is nothing more awesome than picking up an M car at the welt!

So Euro Delivery…

Normally BMW AG sells the car to BMW NA who then sells the car to the dealership. When you do ED, you cut out BMW NA and essentially buy it direct from BMW AG.

So the approx 8% in savings comes from cutting out BMW NA.

My theory (putting on the tin foil hat) is ED was stopped due to COVID and not coming back due to BMWNA.

Because BMW NA would make zero from the new car sale but then has to provide all of the costs of manufacturer support. It wasn’t a ton of cars but it’s money out of BMWNA’s pocket. The only real benefit of ED to BMW NA is building brand loyalty. Since sales are doing well why not just axe it.

I picked up my 2011 M3 at the Welt. Drove the top gear route from Stelvio to Davos and then did 12 laps on the Nurburgring. It was the experience of a lifetime.

Your theory is bunk. The cost savings is because ist shipped over as a tourist delivered car, and BMW does not pay duties on it. BMW NA and the dealership still get paid on it.

That’s so sad. It’s probably the only reason I’d buy a new BMW M. I’ve never taken out a loan in my life —but for this experience, I would haha.

Americans and Canadians could just to enlist and get stationed in Europe…. You’re saving 10%+ on most transactions, plus you can enjoy your car for a couple years, not a week or two.

It’s a great way to improve recruiting numbers!

Wow! That smaller license plate frame looks great, but frankly I’d be happy with the standard sized one if we got the option of horizontal plates in North America. I’ve never understood why so many governments insist on printing you a license plate and mandating that you use only them.

I grew up in Hong Kong where you can run either the square or horizontal shape depending on the design of the vehicle and/or preference. The only thing the government assigns you is the registration number itself. You go to a private license plate shop and have your registration number turned into plates. If you are buying new, the dealer does it for you. Obviously there are standards for fonts and legibility, so everyone’s plates look uniform. A lot more sensible solution in my opinion.

Also, I still think yellow with black lettering in the back, and white with black lettering in the front is the classiest combo lol.

For those wondering, they cancelled it because they said it wasn't popular. In reality, it was popular. Volume dealers whined because they couldn't deliver an in-stock car and fluff it up with crap. There were only a few experienced dealers who truly excelled at ED and pumped cars through. The volume guys also bitched about PCD and now that's gone.

Then there's the logistics of it. BMW's bean counters are streamlining everything. Trains will whiff cars from plant to port, no stops or costs anywhere. Same principle applies to ED. They also likely had the plans to shift away from European production for most models well underway. All 2s and most US-bound 3s are now made in Mexico and all X cars but X1/2 are made in the US. Aside from the odd 550 and M5, most 5s and likely all 7s are leaser cars bought on lots. So, the big boat profit-centers weren't the ED target market.

That left it to M2/3/4 and 2/3 series cars in sport spec. The latter of which were usually near-stripper, enthusiast spec models sold not just at discount to MSRP but at $500-750 above ED invoice, or 10ish percent off sticker. My 2017 230i was something like $34k after incentive. In many cases, it probably wasn't very profitable. They could, of course, be like Porsche and charge for it. Porsche charge $1500. I'd happily pay $3k to order a 6MT M3/4 in indie paint for Euro pickup.

Hey guys I am quite new here. For a long time I was dreaming to get back into the BMW Team. Since 18 years old I have owned an e36 convertible and an e90 318i. After that I have switched teams to Ford Performance and bought a brand new 2017 Ford Focus RS. After 5 happy years I have decided to let go and sold it. Pretty fast it got really clear to me what to get next. I mean the G80 is truly a dream car.
Now a year later the day has finally come to collect my new dream car at the BMW Welt Munich

I could not be happier. The spec is my dream spec. And also its quite rare (at least here in Germany).

Looking forward to further conversations here on Bimmerpost!
Awesome!
Will be there in 2 months.

Why do they have a silver Avalon at the center (picture #3)?

I am not sure you got that right beside the cost involved. There was a decent discount if you do the ED, there was a discounted companion travel, there was the pickup, drop off, insurance, and so on... From that perspective, operating at fairly tight margins, the program was costly for BMW.

However, I do not believe the dealers were crying about it as they were still making their cuts (especially pre-covid with all discounts and incentives) AND the majority of people buying BMWs either did not know about the program or could not "afford" it from all other costs perspectives buzzing around Europe, and the timing to take (considerable) time off (at least 10+ days) work was another challenge for me and significant other (plus someone to take care of the kids...). I do not believe the program was extremely popular.

One of my CAs used to sell 100s of cars a year via ED to people he never met in person. That was back when you could stack incentives on M cars and when even M cars via ED did not come from dealer allocation - so he could move lots of them. He operated out a small dealer in Central CA. He (and I'm told a couple others at other dealers) was (were) shut down (the rules changed) because the big dealers complained. ED slowed thereafter.

Awesome color and combination. The icing on the cake was the welt delivery. I was debating between Portimao vs Aventurine and looks like you couldnt go wrong. Enjoy ur car !!! For those of us missing ED, I dont know if I would have been able to drive the car on the Autobahn without going over the break-in limits. 90 mph, 5000 rpm on the Autobahn might have been hard task esp with thjs car
