So we are coming up on a year that my wife has had her G82. She won the “tire lottery” and it was fitted with the PS4’s. Today, she calls me and asks me to take a look at her tires as they are making a funny noise. I was shocked to see that the rears were not only down to the cords…but the rubber had come through in one spot. How could this be on a car with less than 8k miles on the clock. Obviously, my wife isnt doing Smokey burnouts or anything like that. Could the lowering springs have caused this? I’ve never seen anything like it…

that is some serious wear, interested to know if there is anything rubbing on the tire. Is it only on that one tire?

I've driven 40K miles plus with Michelin PS4's and never had issues or seen anything like that. Obviously that 40K miles included a swap out of new tires. I think the tires are rated around 30K.

I bet your wife ran over something in the road that contributed to the tread separating like that. Very lucky it didn't cause damage to the car. My wife ran over two nails over the life of the tires and I had to get them fixed but the tread never separated.

Edit: The 40K miles included stock height and lowered via KW HAS and no issues.

its both rears. this one was the worst, tho. there is literally a bulge coming through the cords

it was. regardless...even if it had terrible camber, the edges would be bald, as well, no?

that makes sense....but its on both rears and the fronts are just fine. i dont get it i'm gonna go run and take a couple more pics for reference

Can you take a full picture of the tire surface? This is the only way to better suggest what the issue may have been with wear pattern.

here are all 4. the driver rear is showing a lot of inside shoulder wear....but it also seems like the wear is a bit excessive over the whole tire for such little miles. especially when compared to the fronts and considering that my wife is really leaning on the car that hard....

I assume RWD?

Not that it should matter after only 8k miles, but there are different compounds across the flat of the tire. I found this out on my F82 when my fronts were showing threads on only the inner edge of the tire, while there was plenty of tread left across the rest of the tire. I didn't know what was going on at the time because there was nothing wrong with the suspension or alignment, but then I watched a video on Youtube about the *STAR* tires and how they're made. And that's where I discovered there are several different rubber compounds across the tire, which would explain the wear.

But, this was after 24k miles, not 8k.

thats EXACTLY what i was thinking. maybe a valet or something. but i checked inside the wheelwell and there's no excess rubber like you'd expect from doing burnouts that would damage the tire that much..

Because I'd hope you'd be able to sense a really bad rear alignment while driving, the pictures determined that statement to be a lie. Tires are also wearing like they're underinflated.

the TPMS light came on, last week for the right front. it was at 28 psi while all of the rest were at 30

Wow that does look like excessive tire wear for 8k miles. Do you have an older child that might have snuck the car out?

Doing some searching it appears even though the tires are rated at 30K they are more like 12-20K tires. I think I got close to 20K now that I think about it (wife commuting on the freeway). I was at 50K miles and had changed the tires out twice from the stock Super Sports to the PS4's. I'm seeing 11K, 12,500K and 15K miles searching on google.

i didnt expect them to last for very long. but i DID expect 10k miles out of em. and even at that...i wasnt expecting cords to be showing

getting it towed to the dealership on Tuesday to have them replaced....hopefully under some kinda warranty.

Yea, the premature wear on those rears compared to fronts are not suspension related. The rears have been lit up a more than a few times lol. You do have camber wear, more than stock, but expected on a drop and maxed out camber OEM adjust.

Honestly, the disparity is too much without burnouts.

And YES, replace ASAP. Its actually illegal to drive with those rears, insurance may even negate coverage due to the tire condition in case of an accident where control is lost. Thats what I have heard in my state at least (FL).

well, im pretty sure she hasnt been living that Formula Drift life without telling me. is there a way the dealership can check the ECU to see how many times TC has been disabled?
