Unfortunately, while this will be my daily, I need to have my wife at least able to drive it, and she has 0 interest (or ability) to drive a manual, it's the slushbox for me.
I've justified buying snows in the past based on protecting the low pros from winter pot holes+ prolonging the life of the summers+ getting better traction in all conditions so I'm definitely going to buy a winter set no matter what. I'm stuck on the savings from the RWD (which is even greater if leased) would pay for the winter set that I'm going to get anyway than why not save the money and the hundred+ pounds and just get RWD. Thanks everyone for the input.

I assume from your response you haven’t driven a RWD G80 in the snow?

You need winter tires on either car in the snow.

I’ve driven the RWD over the winter on snow tires one year, and the second year I didn’t even swap them on. It was 100% fine, especially on the winter tires (which you need on the AWD too anyway)

The BMW winter wheel and tire set up is excellent. It was about $3500 when I bought it. Never had traction issues even when I drove from Brooklyn to Montreal…it was freezing and snowing up there in winter, no issues at all

Hey All, Not sure where to post this - might as well try here - I'm taking delivery of 2024 M3 6MT (can't friggen wait!) around mid November.

Question is if its a normal ask to have the dealer swap winters on prior to pickup or do you just wait for a day above 35-40degrees to drive home? We might just have a warmer than normal winter this year and this may be a non-issue but wanted to find out what others have done when taking delivery in the winter...thanks!

I picked up a set of barely used all-seasons and asked the dealership if they would throw them on when I take delivery in about a month. Sales guy said they don't do any work on tires or equipment not sold through the dealership. That being said, he did try to sell me a set of winters with wheels for $4k when I was placing my order...Need something better than summer's for the rain, so I would at least put on a set of AS.

I'll likely be in the same situation as you--delivery likely in December. So I'm hoping for a day when temp is >40F (and no rain) and I'll just take a leisurely drive home. In my experience, when temps get below 40, it is easy to have the rear end step out on summer tires.

I drive my Rwd with snow tires yearly. I swap out to summer wheels usually around march, April depending on the weather and go back to them around November when it stays below 45… for the few snow days, I don’t care. And my block and home is on a hill….

I picked up my car in December of 21 and the temperature was about 38 degrees. I'm not sure what your driving habits are, but if you leave your traction control on it won't be a problem. I don't switch tires and as long as no weather is on the roads, I'm good. That being said, I do have other cars to drive and I garage my car. I just ed switched tires at 14k and still could get a few thousand miles.

I'll be driving my 6sp RWD with cold weather tires this winter. I have driven some iteration of a RWD car/cold weather tire combo for the past 30+ years. So much fun!

RWD in winter is no problem, as long as you have good tires for the colder temps and snow.
bigger issue to me is the ground clearance.

I live in Michigan and used to have a 2003 330i zhp. Bought separate set of wheels/snow and winter driving was an absolute blast, unless there was more snow that the vehicle could clear.. but it was typically fine as long as I could get out of the neighborhood.

We leased a 2014 440iX on AS tires (i think..) the problem wasn't driving on snow, X-drive was great for that! the problem was trying to get out of/ into our subdivision when unploughed snow was taller than my ground clearance. (our HoA don't touch the stuff for 3 to 4 days, so snow just turns into grooved ice..)

typically its ok the first day of snow, when it was still soft. but by day 2 and remaining snow that wasn't driven on started to ice over, the last thing you want to hear is the sound of icy snow being pushed out of your way by your bumper.. and there is not a thing your car can do, even with awd, if you are on top of the snow.

after those painful 3 winters with 440i lease, we opted for our BMW SAC or Porsche SUV. thank gawd environmentally not so friendly Germans make physics defying, 5,000 pound+ sporty rides..

congrats!! and who cares about normal questions. you have to cajole your dealer or service guy to take care of stuff like that for you.

if you are planning on getting a wheel/snow set w/ TPMS sold by BMW anyway, try to talk your dealer into installing them for you.
if you use your BMW card, you get 4 or 5% back, so something to think about

if you want to get an All season tires set, or different wheels than offered by BMW, check with tirerack and order a wheel and tire set to get free TPMS mounted. (over $100+ value)
and inquire with local shops to see how much they charge to swap them for ya.

All, Thanks for all the input and feedback. We were able to drive a AWD car and my wife felt she wouldn't be comfortable with RWD. since this is going to be our "fun" car I didn't want to spend the money on something she wouldn't want to drive. We ordered a Comp X-Drive car and it will likely be here in December (hopefully January)
