Need shop recommendation - Front Windshield replacement

Good morning gents, as the title states I am in need of a recommendation for a shop local to the tri-state, preferably in NY to replace my front windshield.

Unfortunately got a crack in it, and didnt want to go with insurance recommended Safelite. Car has like 3k miles and I dont want to hate the car if it doesnt come out perfect.

Insurance is willing to pay for oem glass, calibration but I would have to cover any part of the labor excess of $40.

BMW quoted me at $219 an hr and said its a five hour job.

Appreciate any recommendations, particularly one you've had your G80 glass replaced at. Thanks.

Why not Safelite? I too was skeptical at first but have had the windshield changed with OEM glass twice with them in last six months and all went well. First time was at the shop and second time they came to house. I like being able to watch the process when they come to the house for peace of mind. Also if you pay out of pocket you do not need to spend the $299 on calibration. Tech said that BMW’s auto calibrate but still have to do it for insurance claims. This will save you money if doing out of pocket.

Thanks for the quick response, idk man was just worried something might be off and worried I would then hate the car.

Insurance is willing to pay oem glass, calibration and labor no more then $40.

My buddy owns a glass shop in Philly, he’s been a family friend for many years. He told me that BMW (and all Euro) glass is not “better”…it’s “safer as per highway specs” because harder OEM glass is more likely to shatter super tiny for head/face impact (but we have seatbelts and airbags). The harder glass also cracks WAY easier from road debris impacts. He said aftermarket USA glass resists impacts better, and is more likely to chip or star than to run a crack like OEM does. I chose the non-OEM for the crack resistance, and I have light tint inside my windshield so no need to protect my face from glass shatter edges. Having a rain sensor and the drive-assist cameras can add a few bucks more for “calibration” but most shops just install a new “gel” which is the clear sticky pad that the rain sensor and camera eyes mount with. That skips the need to recalibrate with ISTA, but I would still want the calibration done even with new gels just installed.

Just my experience…passing it along.

I’d go to Safelite as long as it was a shop with a garage instead of a mobile/truck outfit because it’s cleaner inside, and no direct sun to possibly affect work speed or curing time. I do prefer a real glass shop, that does high volume and uses quality tools and products, but I’m lucky to “know a guy”.

My windshield got nailed from a rock on the parkway. BMW dealer gave me a quote for 2g's. I'll be going safelite route when I get it replaced.

Same here, decided to go Safelite after the dealership told me their rate and the recommendations here. But now I'm Shit out of luck though, since the glass is out of stock nationwide and in Germany according to Safelite and my local dealer.

So will sit and wait. Lol.

They say that but it usually comes in fast like within a week or so. I’ve been through this twice already in less than 6 months. I was told no estimated date of being in stock and got a call a few days later. I believe these go on all 3 series and not exclusive to M from previous research. Good luck!
