Thanks for the explanation. Who makes up all these crap regulations?
U.S. DOT with input from NHTSA probably.

For his size (literally and financially), G80 is small indeed.

What annoys me the most about this guy is his voice. I almost always turn OFF the video when he says - Hey Guys, it's Shmeeeeeeeeeee.

Thanks for the explanation. Who makes up all these crap regulations?

This law has been in effect in the USA (and Canada) since 1960s by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (US DOT) and they had the best intentions at the time.

Back then, many vehicle models had very small tail lights, which could be hard to see until you were literally right up on them and the taillight's plastic/color quality of that time, had a tendency to fade over a shorter period, so the US governing bodies forced automakers to design bigger tail light assemblies, which were more visible to other drivers, by legislating a minimum size requirement, across the board.

The size requirement is based on a concept called EPLLA (Effective Projected Luminous Lens Area), which states that the minimum illuminated size of a rear turn signal (or brake light) must be at least 50 cm squared (or 7- 3/4 in squared). If this size requirement is not met, then automakers are forced to change the rear turn signals in order to comply.

With the advent and complacency of LEDs lights and better quality plastic technology, its bright intensity makes the larger size requirement moot. However, since the laws was never revised to incorporate modern lighting technology, taking brightness into consideration, instead, the old US law concentrates primarily on minimum illuminated size of the brake light and turn signal, forcing manufacturers to adapt to the older requirement, even with jarring bright LED lights of today, thus, sometimes having to develop two separate taillights, for each region.

Wow, extreme amount of hate for this guy. If you consider him an articulate human brochure, he meets expectations.

Anyway, this video was excellent. I feel like BMW M marketing is working overtime to ensure the G8x is a success despite the reception to the new styling. I’m loving it; lots of transparency to satisfy my curiosity about this incredible machine.

I'm amazed that this is really the best way BMW can implement the radar - looks like a sloppy aftermarket job

Now, I don’t love Shmee or anything, but he is pretty knowledgeable and rarely gets facts wrong. I can’t say the same for other YouTubers that are more well-liked.

I guess you're referring to the new S Class that doesn't have a big 3 pointed star on the grill? For the models that do have the grill mounted star, the radar is hidden behind it and therefore invisible which is ideal IMO.

I'm sure it's where the engineers wanted it, not where the design team did. There are a lot of factors that complicate positioning. Manufacturability, thermal / aerodynamic influence, regulatory, plus functional requirements of the unit. I'm guessing the cosmetics are the last thing considered. With so much open frontal area, I'm not sure there's a great way to hide it.
