Overall 4 series sales in North America, including the the G82, are up more than 100% in the first quarter of 2021. Apparently more people like the new look than this forum would have us believe. Neither the designers nor the accountants are about to apologize

I live in LA where I see a lot of BMW's. I have only seen one 4 series on the road, and it was a few blocks away from the BMW dealer. Haven't seen any new M3/M4's, but those just came out.

On average I see 3 new 4-Series cars a day here in SoCal.

It's clear this car doesn't like the camera,, photos don't show the 3rd dimension of the front end, also it looks better with darker colors or frozen, more aggressive look. What I don't like is the side profile and side lines, that's not BMW hard shoulder lines that we know, see the f90 for example, the side line is from the side gill to the tail light (real BMW design), the G80 is somehow better than G82,, the whole car as a package is very compelling though.

Theres some really nice lines on the g80 but they're not harsh straight lines like on the f80 right across the door handle. There's a nice curved line that starts at the tail light and arches just above the door handles and makes its way neatly into the front wheel arch and then there's a secondary line flowing off that that curves down into that air breather area aligned with the a pillar which I think looks very cool. I really wish I was in the crowd that didn't like the looks though cuz I'd save a bunch of money 🤣 that's why I love when people are trying to tell me I'm convincing myself to be ok with the looks lol

You and me both. Wish I still didn't like it. And then would save for my GT3. But the fact that I've grown to like how outrageous it looks, with the pug nose and large exhaust tips, and since it drives so well, I decided that I need to own this version of M. My M4 just started production. 🤣🤣🤣

Honestly the rear exhaust tips are so prime.

I'm such a sucker for huge exhaust tips, the rear of the G80 is my favorite of all the gens.

Honestly I don't know why all the photos are taken level with the grille. That's not how you'll ever see the car in real life.

Looking down on the car from a higher angle is a much better, more flattering angle (which makes sense since that's what they'd be taking into account).

I don't know, with the coming EV age front grilles will become more and more rare. Teslas always appear odd to me without any front opening whatsoever but that's becoming the new direction, similar to the Mustang Mach-E. The extroverted grill on the G8x runs (very much) counter to this trend and it's probably intentional. I'm happy to have an opportunity to get one of the perhaps last manual ICE performance cars and I take the grill as a symbol of that sentiment.

Oversized ugly grills started with Audi
Rented a Q5 last week for work trip
Drove nice
Would never own it
And same for this 4 series

Except BMW is putting those grills on their EVs too.

Saw an M4 last night in the wild parked at a shopping center. Drove in front of it and it was just as bad as I remember it from seeing one at the dealership.

I'm not one to be an echo chamber but almost every car forum that I visit, whenever I go into the general forums and see some M3/M4 review posted, all I see is them talking about the nose and grilles.

The kidneys in grill form are worth BILLIONS to BMW. No other company on the planet has grills as consistently recognizable as BMW’s kidneys. Dating back to the existence of the first few models.

They are not going anywhere. If anything they are going to become bigger and louder and more in your face. Less functional and more design.

Except they are now not the kidneys that BMW has been recognized for for so many years.

I would be curious to know how the design process went. Someone, Dukec? Vanhooy? said we need a dramatic new design. Designers, come up with some radical new ideas! Some version of the new 4 series kidneys was one of the ideas and they said Yes! That's perfect. Lets go with that.

That is not how things work in big corporations.

This circle jerk is probably a good re-enactment of how 100 design meetings went before the final result was approved:

My experience with Germans suggests that it's very methodical.

Horizontal M stripes (probably on the left, from the front, nostril) are a sad inevitability.
