S58 Reliability

I know it's a pretty new engine, but as far as we know are there any flaws like some of the old M engines like rod bearings, or spun crank hub bolts? and the general reliability of the engine really. Im thinking of the g80 but this will have to last me for at least 5-6 years as a daily driver with lots of LA traffic driving along with occasional track use. Thanks for any input.

There was a recall on RB’s but seems like it was relegated to a small batch. Time will tell on long term.

CH was improved to single piece design and they went away from DCT so pan leaks should be gone but AT’s can leak as well.

Lower oil cooler is still present so could be prone to damage.

S55 has very few problems, CH is way overblown. I don't expect S58 to have many problems as they've no doubt incorporated the lessons from both 55 engines and B58 into S58. Turbo-6s are BMW's bread and butter. Also, warm your engine oil up properly before you start ragging on it, and there's no reason why you can't pre-emptively do extra oil changes yourself between the standard dealer intervals if you're running it hard

Check out Vehicular DIY, he is very informative and just purchased one. No more crank hub in S58 also. Link below:

I'm close to 13k miles into my S58 X3MC with no hiccups or issues, and I drive it hard including triple digit speeds every day.

Good to hear and must be nice to live in an area where you can drive like that. Id be lucky to do 40 during traffic which is always here. Does the s58 engine burn a lot of oil?

COVID traffic has done wonders for my commute, although I do take risk regarding LEOs.

No oil burning for me so far. 1200 mile break in service only and I'm close to due for 1 yr service (+12k mi) after that. Frankly, I haven't even thought about the oil. Maybe that's not good.

Hi Transfer. I am looking to get into the s58 platform in the next few years and was wondering if you had an update on the reliability and or service details since this post.

I'm at 11k miles, and just completed an oil change at 6800 miles from last service. No oil burned, with 2 autocrosses a single 20 minute track session and flogging the hell out of it damn near constantly.

No changes, no issues! I'm at 19k miles over 18 months with many redline and 100+ mph moments. Still haven't thought about the engine or oil except for the car telling me when to service it.

A bad batch of engines (or engine parts) doesn't necessarily mean poor reliability overall for the platform.
