APEX | VS-5RS Sprint Line Forged Technical Thread

Our G8x-Specific VS-5RS wheels have arrived and are ready to ship.

With BMW’s switch to the 5x112 bolt pattern for their modern chassis, our catalog of 5x120 fitments was no longer useable. While this limited our ability to easily transition existing wheel fitment and designs directly to the new M3 and M4 platforms, it gave us an opportunity to develop wheels from the ground up for this specific application. The result is a bolt-on staggered fitment that offers more concavity than almost all of the previous bolt-on setups for earlier M3 and M4 chassis while offering superb brake clearances and offsets optimized for your M3 or M4.

Our recently launched forged Sprint Lines were the perfect place to start when choosing a design for the new M3 and M4. As the lightest wheels we’ve ever made, the Sprint Line embodies not just a focus on reduced weight but also increased strength in critical areas of the wheels often overlooked by other wheel manufacturers. Ultimately we selected the VS-5RS for its low weight and aggressive modern aesthetic.

Meet the VS-5RS

As part of our forged Sprint line, the VS-5RS was built to be extremely light while still offering a meaningful strength increase over our flow-formed wheels. Engineered for drivers looking to shed as much weight as possible to improve lap times.

The Deepest in the Range

The low factory offsets and generous dimensions of the factory fenders gave us the unique opportunity to offer more concave wheel fitments for the G8x M3 and M4. Previous APEX wheel designs were limited to profile 3 levels of concavity but the all new Motorsport Blanks allowed us to produce deeply concave wheels specifically suited to the brake clearance requirements and low offsets of this new chassis. This additional concavity lets us bring weight down while maintaining strength and also contributes to the gorgeous aesthetic.

The Details

APEX as a brand has always focused on motorsport and track day fitments. While many of our wheels are run on the street, we always strive to first serve customers that push their cars on track even with newer cars that are more likely to be dual-duty platforms or only see occasional track use. This has naturally led us to focus on smaller diameter wheels which have inherent rotational mass and tire cost advantages. With 19” wheels in development for other platforms, we knew 20” wheels would also be in demand for the G8x M3 and M4 both for dual staggered setups with 20” wheels in the rear and 20” square and staggered fitments as well.

Our 20” wheel development is still ongoing as we are striving to perfect these fitments but with the 19s arriving first, we wanted to give those of you who are interested in 19s the opportunity to purchase now instead of waiting for a complete dual diameter lauch. 20” wheels are still in the works and updates on their arrival will be posted here moving forward.

19’s are ready for shipping in limited supply and can be ordered via the following link:

Brake Clearances

With spoke profiles optimized around the CCB and Steel OE brakes, Our 19” and 20” VS-5RS wheels clear the all of the OE brakes in our recommended staggered fitments. Those of you looking for deeper insights on brake clearances can view our Brake Clearance Table which will be updated as aftermarket kits become available for this chassis.

If you have a specific aftermarket brake kit in mind for your M3 or M4, please follow the instructions listed on the FAQ section of the table to get clearance data for your specific brakes.

A Fitment For You

Beyond just providing prices and details on wheels, APEX strives to provide relevant information and fitment recommendations for the chassis we serve. A huge part of that is our fitment guides.

More tire details and notes will be added to this guide as our knowledge of the chassis expands and grows. If you have fitment feedback or notes you’d like to have added to the guide, or questions about wheel fitment on this chassis, please start on our Support Page and give us a shout!

Seeing is Believing

Finishes

10K Tons Of Pressure

Our new forgings weigh as much as 120 pounds before machining. To form such a thick blank we require special equipment capable of 10,000 metric tons of pressure. This extreme pressure increases the strength of the aluminum by eliminating porosity and improving the grain structure.

True Motorsport Blanks

Many companies use 3rd-party blanks intended for non-motorsport wheels which can severely limit sizes, concavity, spoke design, and critical brake clearance. We designed our very own blank profiles from scratch which gives us total control over the final product, resulting in exceptionally deep spokes and stronger designs.
Learn more about our true motorsport blanks.

Side-milled Spokes

One of the most significant upgrades to our Sprint wheels is the addition of wider and deeper side-milled spokes. Any excess material that doesn’t add strength is carved out using a precision CNC ball cutter. Side-milling is often deemed cost-prohibitive by others, but for true performance without compromise we believe it's essential.

➡︎ 40-50% Wider
➡︎ 50-100% Deeper

Learn more about our wider and deeper side-milling.

A Stronger Lightweight Wheel

Our forged Sprint™ wheels are lightweight without the strength compromises found on typical lightweight wheels. First, we carved out as much material as possible, then we purposefully added one pound back to reinforce critical areas, creating a stronger inner lip and a higher load rating.¹ What’s the point of a lightweight wheel if it’s fragile?

Weight Optimized

We conducted extensive Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to reinforce high-stress areas and to remove material where it didn’t improve strength. The result is a wheel that is exceptionally light without the strength compromises found on typical lightweight wheels.

Independently Tested

We don't rely solely on computer simulations or unverifiable in-house testing. We believe independent testing is critical to protect consumers in this unregulated industry. We chose STL, an independent lab in Ohio, to test our Sprint™ wheels far above JWL standards, including increases in testing duration, impact drop height, and total load.
Learn more about our rigorous independent testing.

Tough Inner Lip

Introducing the Sprint™ spec inner lip, with a unique channel profile that makes it even stronger than our previous designs. So even though our Sprint™ wheels are pounds lighter than comparable flow formed wheels, the inner lip is 32% stronger.
Learn more about our Sprint™ spec inner lip.

Big Brake Clearance

From day one, APEX has been on a mission to build wheels that clear big brakes. Our new forged wheels are the product of everything we’ve developed over the past 10+ years, including an innovative high-clearance barrel design and vehicle-specific spoke profiles.

Deeper Concavity

Our new forgings were redesigned to create extra deep, concave spoke profiles. Their new shape allows us to make any profile, from flat to deep and everything in between. Each one is optimized for a specific application using 3D laser scans of factory and aftermarket brake kits.

Paintless Knurled Beads

Whether it's a day at the track or months of street driving, repeated hard braking and acceleration can make a tire slip along the bead seat and go out of balance, causing vibration. Knurled beads help, but are less effective when painted over. Our forged line features unpainted knurled beads that stay sharp and maximize grip.
Learn more about why our forged wheels have unpainted knurled beads.

Built for impact sockets

Track wheels need track tools. Don’t settle for wheels that require undersized tuner lugs or thin walled sockets. All APEX wheels accommodate over-sized race lugs and impact sockets to make swapping wheels lightning fast.

Laser-Engraved Specs

As track enthusiasts ourselves, we know how frustrating it is to try to locate and decipher wheel specs that have been hastily hammered into the rim or become unreadable over time. With our new Sprint™ wheels, we chose to invest a little extra and laser-engrave the specs on the barrel, in plain sight, making them easy to find and read. (You’re welcome.)

Additional Features

Hub Centric - All APEX BMW wheels with a 5x120mm bolt pattern are purpose built featuring a 72.56mm center bore. No centering rings required.

Center Caps - We don't charge extra for caps and we design our BMW wheels to be interchangeable with the OE roundel cap for enthusiasts seeking a clean factory look. All wheels come with our gloss Black APEX caps included. We also offer optional gloss red or gloss blue APEX caps.

Hardware - APEX wheels can be used with all OEM mounting hardware, proper aftermarket hardware and wheel spacers. Wheel locks and stud conversion kits also work perfectly.

TPMS - All APEX wheels accept OEM and aftermarket Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors and standard fit valve stems. If your vehicle isn’t equipped with sensors or you choose to bypass them for your track/race car, then select from our metal stems available in multiple finishes.

Lifetime Warranty

All APEX wheels come with a lifetime structural warranty against defects in workmanship and materials, plus a 1 year finish warranty. Exchanges are fast, easy, and hassle-free.

APEX Wheel Replacement Program

While we've mentioned the program on these threads before, we wanted to share this freshly released video going through our Wheel Replacement Program with you all. This program is an under-appreciated part of buying APEX wheels that can be hugely valuable if you go off track midway through a lap or tackle the median of the street outside Cars & Coffee.

Our goal wasn't just to make pushing your car to the limit more affordable but also to reduce the chances of a bent wheel being sold on the aftermarket. All 4 wheel set orders are eligible for this program and while we hope you won’t have to use it, you’re covered if you do.

How APEX Engineers A Better Track Wheel

Crazy to think, but this is our first ever, in-depth video about any of our wheels.

Our engineering team put 2 years of hard work into our new Sprint Line and the forging dies that made them possible, so we were compelled to create a technical video that dives into the details. This video has a lot of great content our product descriptions don’t include. After watching, we’re confident you’ll truly appreciate why these features are so valuable.

If you're craving more content, this should quench your thirst.

APEX | Customer Showcase: Basic Performance’s G80 M3 on 19” VS-5RS Forged wheels.

When Basic Performance, our premier dealer in South Korea, learned we were making forged fitments for the G8X M3 and M4 they immediately reached out. Having run many of our wheels on their shop cars and customer cars over the years, APEX wheels were the natural fit for the G80 M3 competition they had on order. As you can see from this post the final result was worth the wait. The VS-5RS really suits the aggressive yet clean aesthetic of this track build and the weight savings and increased width of this staggered 19” fitment brought even more performance to the already capable G80 platform. Our 19x10 ET12 wheels also easily cleared the front CCBs with no spacers thanks to the unique spoke shaping designed by our engineering team using Creaform laser scanning data.

Winter Fitments now available on the fitment guide and on our website.

For those of you looking to source winter wheel and tire options, we've added several choices to our Fitment Guide and product pages on our site.

One option is using the more aggressive purpose-built 19x10 ET12 VS-5RS fitment, but we also added some 19x9.5 ET25 options after validating brake clearances against both the OE steel brakes and CCBs. This includes our flow formed SM-10 in a 19x9.5 ET25 fitment giving those of you looking for an affordable and rotatable square winter fitment another great option. These wheels sit alongside our 19x9.5 ET25 VS-5RS wheels originally designed for the A90 Supra.

Satin Bronze coming soon.

A few of you recently reached out to ask if we'd be adding Satin Bronze to the G8X lineup. With a re-order of these wheels already needed, we made the call to add Satin Bronze to the VS-5RS line in G8X M3 &4 specific fitments. These will arrive along with our standard colors in October and we hope to see them on your cars shortly thereafter.

Not to jack the VS-5RS thread, but Tom, when are the winter group buys going to be available, the sooner the better, as product gets snatched up way too quickly nowadays. And I want to take advantage of Tire Racks winter rubber rebate before the end of Sept. I'm looking for something reasonably priced at $300/wheel for my winter needs. Happen to have any minor "cosmetic scuff" sales by chance? Would love to run the following square set of your satin bronze SM10 on my Tanzanite Blue M4, but I'm looking for the old days of your more affordable wheel options EC-7; ARC-8, from the F8x chassis.

Copying my response from the other thread where you posted the same question:

We don't have any blem units in the 5x112 fitments that match what you need, unfortunately. You can always see our entire inventory of Blemished units here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

The issue with the G8X platform is that it changed the bolt pattern and bore of the wheels. While we've built up a huge amount of fitments and some blem units in our 5x120 lineup, we're starting fresh with the new bolt pattern. We may see more affordable options in the future, but right now the flow-formed SM-10s are your best bet.

We'll likely have a group buy on the G8X Specific VS-5RS wheels in the future once we get the 20" fitments, but they are not going to be close to $300.00/wheel even with the max discount of a potential Group Buy.

I can't guarantee that we'll be running any winter Group Buys this year as we haven't run dedicated winter fitment GBs for a few years at this point.

Nothing on 20" wheels that has been lowered as far as I know. Basic's G80 featured above is lowered on 19s and looks great though!

We'll have more photos in the future for these sets.

Not yet as the sample sets that we brought over for the G8X were Anthracite and Brushed Clear only. If it helps to visualize, Kies Motorsports is running Satin Black 19" staggered on their IOM green G80:

Motorsport Gold Update

For those of you not following along with our 20” Group Buy updates, here’s a better look at our all new Motorsport Gold finish alongside our other finish options:

Video Correction:
The "Brushed Clear" finish is not a "raw finish," it's a brushed aluminum with a clear coat applied. No actual machining marks can be seen.

Let us know if you have questions about these colors and fitments!

Yep, It's great to see the lines flushed out and expanded with both new fitments and finishes. I just added an updated finish image to the upper sections but having the full lineup for the inbound 19" and 20" fitments is definitely exciting.
