Lightbulb 400 miles late for brake in service~

I was browsing the used market on Cars and came across a used 2021 12k miles M4. Sales said the car is not certified pre-owned because the previous owner was 400 miles late for his break-in service. What do you guys think? Do you think is not a big deal, or is that a deal breaker?

It probably doesn't matter much, but the sales price certainly takes a hit. You may get a discount now and you may have to give a discount when selling it.

The risk is high enough that BMW wont certify it. The engineers and corporate drew a line in the sand somewhere. Sure there are mitigating factors like the low miles, but it also could be it was driven very hard during break in. Deal breaker?, that depends on the cost.

Certified M3/M4's are very rare. Probably just an excuse by the dealer

What’s your plan for it? Unlock and full mods. Maybe. Daily for a few years then trade in, absolutely no then.

This. Dealers are pain with certifying. I bet if you offer an extra grand they might consider it.

got it~ Thanks for sharing your thoughts~

TBH, I am just another cheapskate who doesn't want to pay full price for a car. It's black in color, which I prefer to Isle of Man green, but the good thing is it comes with a carbon ceramic brake and, most importantly, a BMW authentic bucket seat!! Its selling for 75k, 2021 ~ model~

I might consider it after giving it a second thoughts, you guys are right, its not worth the risk since I am paying 75 k for it.

dealers say a lot of stuff and most of it is nonsense. what is the actual mileage when the service was performed? If by 400 miles late they mean it was done at 1600 instead of 1200, i wouldn't worry about that for a single second and it would not factor in one bit in the buying decision.

Does paying $200 for a lifetime supply of nitrogen at time of sale qualify as nonsense?

Lol 😂

400 miles is not that much over. If it was done at 2500 or 3000 miles I'd have more of a problem, but if you can get BMW's word in writing (not the dealer, BMW directly) that the warranty is in-tact, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

If the break-in service wasn't performed on time, there is a chance the powertrain warranty is no longer valid. You should check into that with a dealership.

"Certified Pre-owned" is a separate warranty.

Makes wonder if the previous owner beat the crap out of the car. Hard pass.

BMW CPO has very specific guidelines to allow a vehicle to qualify for the program.

400 miles over the 1200mi break-in service may be just one of those arbitrary rules they have in place where they won't allow it... however if it was 299 miles, that might be ok.

OR

Maybe the dealership doesn't want to pay for full set of new tires to meet certification guidelines.

Either way, you could ask if you could get an ESC bmw warranty for a warranty extension.

The more important question that should have been asked is: When were the actual "Oil Services" performed during it's aprox 3 years of ownership? (Did the owner even bother brining it in for the included yearly oil services?)

It should be fine. I did mine at 1600 miles as I had to take a trip to the carolinas and was too early to get it done before the trip. Dealer just said to come back after the trip and they did it. I think the arbitary number is like 2500 miles for break in. Higgy_CSL could confirm

If the car is still covered by the remainder of the warranty, I would go for it.

I don’t think bmw checks rev limiter when certifying like Porsche does. 1200 mile break in for someone who babied it vs someone who was bouncing off the rev limiter the first 1200 miles is probably the same in BMWs book if they aren’t looking for it.

I avoided a non CPO m3 last month over the same issue except it was 1200 miles over the recommended interval. It just didn't sit right with me. Car was great otherwise. I ended up ordering new so I know exactly the car history from day 1.
