Break-In: How much do you care?

Everyone knows the proper break in procedure by now.
  • Keep it under 5.5k RPM
  • Don't cruise at a set RPM for too long
  • No WOT
I've had quite a few M cars and with each one, I've gotten progressively worse at honoring the proper break-in guidelines. Never had any issues with the cars at all and I'm not sure if I've ever heard of an engine break definitively because break-in wasn't properly completed.

That said, just a poll to see how many subscribe to the different philosophies.

I followed them. I might want to keep this car for a while.

Maybe.

I leased my M3 so i clicked the "mixed" option.

I don't care for the car but at the same time i didn't want any early issues so i was trying to break it in properly. However i think i did redline it a few times during break in. Some people have reported they beat the shit out of it since day 1 with no issues.

Although i have to say after the 1200 mile service, i am giving this car hell lol. But i still don't drive it often.

I do know during the last year of my lease i am going to destroy this lol. Make sure i get it nice and ready for the 2nd owner when i give the car back to the dealer lmao

I keep my cars for a long time so follow break in by the book. It seems like most people just lease and trade and repeat so wouldn't be surprised if a significant portion of people don't care about break in.

I've never broken in a car and never will. The cars are broken in from the factory. Never had an issue once in my 19 years of driving.

Cars are not broken in at the factory thats an urban legend. Most cars are delivered with less 20 miles on them.

You are not just breaking in the engine but the entire drive train down to & including the tires. Gears have to mesh, brakes have to bed & tires have to wear off the molding compound (about 200 miles) & heat cycle.

An occasional oops is fine.

BMW can tell if you rode it like a 2 dollar whore btw.

Another good reason to NOT buy a lease return.

Which is why I never do!

lol oh people will. Especially since it'll probably still take 10 months to get a G80. People will have no choice but to buy used.

The fun starts!

Better to take it easy for 1200 miles and then enjoy it for however long you keep it, vs being impatient and running into issues later. 1200 miles took me ~3 weeks to pass by, just drive.

I'm planning to knock out at least 800 of the 1,200 break-in miles on my drive back from PCD, so that'll definitely help.

I have to day I'm glad at least on Bimmerpost it seems most people take pretty good care of their cars when it comes to break-in. On the Facebook groups there's this sense of "you paid for it so drive it however you please from day 1" mentality which is just disgusting.

As I'm currently sitting at a little over 800 miles on mine, I have been trying my best to honor break in. Might have did a handful of pulls but nothing too crazy.

A touch judgmental. So I assume you never speed? Follow all the rules? If you do speed can we automatically assume you value the health of your car over a human life? It's fine that you followed the owners manual but to assume others "have issues" is a little much.

Bingo.

I was careful with my M340i during break-in, but it wasn't a big deal if I gassed it every once in a while. I am completely dedicated to a proper break-in on my M440i GC and following the guidelines closely.

The difference? M340i was a lease, while the M440i GC is being financed. I knew I was going to turn in that M340i at or before the end of the lease, but as of writing this, I'm planning on keeping the M440i GC for a bit.

Exactly. And from my personal experience, whether i'm in the M or not, whenever i see other M drivers on the road, they drive like absolute dickheads. So i can assume those guys actually DRIVE their cars.

Plus if it's a lease, why wouldn't you have your fun? Not like people are going to just sit at the dealer lot before giving the lease back redlining the engine for 1 hour before handing the keys over.

People literally complain about anything these days lol.

Virtue signaling is at an all time record these days. People forget that our country was build on differences of opinion. If that doesn't work for someone, there is always China, N. Korea and Russia.

I do not understand this logic. Regardless, you are the one driving the car. You are the one who has to take it in if it needs service and have to live without it or with some random loaner while they fix it even if under warranty.
As for the longevity argument, some people buy their cars outright and never keep them past the warranty period, while some buy their leases out and keep it longer.

If you think the manufacturer recommendation does not make sense to you, go ahead. But unless someone else is paying for the car and servicing it for you while you drive an equal or better car, it matters not how you acquired it.
