Car Shipping Co. Recommendations

Hello everyone,

My car has arrived at the dealership in IL and now I am looking to get it shipped back to me in MD.

Any recommendations on a reputable and safe car shipping company?

I will have it in an enclosed transporter and there are so many options out there! First time doing this!

Thank you!

A couple of years ago I needed to ship my 67 GTO from IL to AZ. I had heard too many horror stories with the big freight companies and decided to use a recommendation. A family friend has a large and very nice collection, he recommended Terry at Cars Enclosed Inc (it was also import to me to have a closed trailer). I trust this family friend and how anal he is about his cars. I can’t say enough good things about Terry. He was communicative and kept me updated the whole journey. The car arrived without a scratch. Here’s a few snaps of his rig (family business) and his contact info.

Good luck!

Personally don’t think enclosed transport is really worth it for g80. It gets shipped to the dealer in open transport. And it’s daily driver. I don’t see why it needs enclosed considering how much more expensive it is.

Yes, I hear you. On the fence now since my car arrived at the dealer in IL covered in grit and salt after being transported from Baltimore port!

Definitely will consider open if price difference is significant. Thank you

Thanks everyone for the replies.

So far I’ve been quoted from $950 (SGT) to $1435 (Guardian) for enclosed.

And $650 (SGT) for open transport.

The distance is about 750 miles.

SGT is rated very high in the US News ratings…

Not as high as some of yours… read some reviews but you never know. Thanks

Just be careful and ensure the driver fills out the pickup inspection sheet with the dealer.

Is SGT a broker, or are they all in-house?

I had made a reservation with SGT and then started to dig more into BBB, reviews, etc a d in the end I cancelled my order with them.

Going with Guardian Auto Transport. One thing I found out is that the vast majority of them are brokers and it varies a lot. I will be paying way more but based on my research, I think I am in better hands.

Yeah, we dealt with a broker for my son's E39 and the guy dropped the car on the ramp because he cut the wheel too soon. There is no recourse without spending an astronomical amount on a lawyer and a "he said, she said" story.

The car was seemingly fine, but it messed up a bunch of stuff. We ended up shipping it back, and I spent last summer replacing the chains, guides, etc. It runs well, but it's been quirky ever since. It ran like a top when I shipped it, so I've gotta go back in and tune it up some.

That said, the dude that dropped it off was cool, and he had all his ducks in a row and told me that I could reach him directly next time.

Might not be a bad idea to video the car getting loaded and unloaded. Then if something goes awry, it’s not he said/she said. FFT.

My CA ave the transport driver will go over 20 point check list and it will be all documented with videos and pics.

Also the company is listed in each transporter insurance policy.

I opted for enclosed transport, more premium cost but knowing that no one can guarantee anything 100%, at least I feel better in reducing the odds of mishandlings to happen.

I found a BMW series 3 in Illinois and needed to ship it to Maryland. I used A1 Auto Transport for an enclosed transport and was pretty satisfied with the service. They charged me $1400, and the car arrived in 6 days without any issues. It was my first time using a shipping company too, so I can relate to the overwhelm with all the options available.

Based on my experience, I'd recommend checking them out. They seem to handle routes between Illinois and Maryland quite efficiently. For more specific details, you might find this link helpful: https://www.a1autotransport.com/illi...-car-shipping/.

I have always used Reliable Carriers. Expensive but they are the gold standard. Family owned company who are enthusiasts as well.

Not to derail this thread, but you got any pics of that GTO?

Here's my 67 with an LS7 and a Tremec 5-speed manual.
