Phoenix, AZ: Cracked Windshield

Very sad to say that driving home from Scottsdale to DT PHX tonight, a rock was kicked up on the freeway from a truck ahead of me resulting in a nice gash in my windshield. I have a few other very small ones from other highway drives, but this one is about 3/4" wide and has a portion that looks like it will continue to crack as time goes on and its introduced to the heat of the day.

I opted for windshield replacement coverage on my insurance and have been reading about the best way to go about getting an OEM replacement properly fitted with all the sensors and everything mounted correctly. Was hoping to get an idea of others in the area who have had their windshields replaced. Did you go through Safelite? Local shop? BMW dealer? Wish I didn't have to inquire about this but it is what it is. Thanks.

I had to get mine replaced. Opted to get it done at the BMW dealership so I had less worries about the sensors, etc.

Insurance cost was $2500 minus my deductible. One day job.

Cheers 🥂

I haven’t done it on my M3 yet but had to do it a couple of times on my X3 M40i. The first time it happened I took it to the dealership and they quoted me over $2k to do it. I’d have to pay for it and then my insurance company would reimburse me but my insurance company said they may not cover full replacement depending upon what the final bill was. I opted to just use Safelite due to that. Safelite came out and replaced the windshield and calibrated the sensors without any issues. It was a perfect install job and was OEM glass.

The second time around I had Safelite come out due to my previous experience. The second time wasn’t as great. By then they had non-OEM glass in stock and was told that the insurance company wouldn’t pay for OEM since the other glass was readily available. The install itself was fine but then the guy couldn’t get the sensors calibrated for some reason and said I needed to take it into the Safelite shop so they can perform the calibration in house instead. I never ended up taking it in as I wasn’t too far out from when I was going to be trading it in for the M3 so just never bothered to try and find the time.

In the end, it really depends upon the tech you get from Safelite. If they are a competent tech and take their time there should be zero issues.

I had to have mine done and used K&B Auto Glass, recommended to me by service advisor at Chapman since they don't do windshields. They got insurance approval for OEM Glass which they got direct from BMW. They did a great job, clean install, recalibrated everything when finished. $0 cost to me, it becomes a Comp claim on your insurance (Not accident).

Thank you guys. I think I’m gonna go through blue chip glass, I’ve read other varying satellite reviews similar to chicagofan00 and considering it’s an expensive vehicle with sensors and all that, I’d rather not have lingering doubts about their capability to fix things

Pic attached for reference. It’s smaller that a quarter and located passenger side so I think it just needs a fill which stresses me out less than a full replacement. Appreciate all your suggestions!

I’ve had Safelite fill two chips/cracks. They did a good job with that and the fix has worked so far. Neither have spread since and I still have my factory windshield.

That is great news and makes things a bit easier. I guess rock chips are just something to expect living around these parts. I’m from Northern California and never got one rock chip there so it’s a bit of an adjustment lol

Definitely a common occurrence on the roadways here. I’ve had years where I went through 3 windshields and several repairs.

It doesn’t help that the manufacturers are using thinner glass as a means to reduce weight.

I don’t care if I have to slow down or zip around someone, but I refuse to drive behind lifted trucks or Jeeps that don’t have wheel arches and mudflaps. I‘ve had to replace three windshields in the last two years. I’m usually a “leave me alone and I’ll leave you alone” kind of guy, but these a**holes make me wish AZ had a safety inspection, so they would loose their registration until they make the truck legal. I make enough money that a chipped or cracked windshield is an inconvenience but not a big deal, but there are plenty of low/mid income working people who can’t just drop hundreds or thousands every time a bro-dozer kicks up a rock.

100%
I’m lucky as well that this doesn’t negatively impact me a huge amount financially but yeah it sure is a pain in the ass and would be great to avoid if possible. And yeah, no mud flaps on the truck that kicked up the rock and hit me. Sure would be nice to have a change there.

I would also add that there should be a law that these landscapers and dump trucks need to do more to protect the loads they carry around. If it wasn’t for them there probably would be 70% less debris on the roads and freeways to begin with.
