Maryland folks: Front license?

I'm curious whether any of the MD folks are driving without a front license and have seen any issues? I doubt most local / county cops would care, but I'm guessing it might catch the eyes of state troopers, and maybe the occasional parking maid?

My front plate is in the glovebox and I don't have any plans to put it on that beautiful nose
I have not been pulled over, but to be fair, I've only had my car since the end of Sept 2021 and she's been somewhat of a garage queen. I still need to get my windows tinted, but I think I'm going to go with 35% so I don't give JohnnyLaw another reason to pull me over.

If you don't have a front MD plate, I know that parking on the street in DC will definitely result in a ticket and sometimes a tow! Ask me how I know.

Good to know, thanks. I don't venture down to DC often, but I'll keep that in mind. Does displaying the plate in the windshield for those circumstances suffice, or does it need to be mounted externally? Maybe I'll consider the sto 'n show mount for when needed.

It must be mounted to the front of the car. Since MD requires the license plate to be affixed to the front of the vehicle, DC can ping you if you fail to keep your car in compliance with the laws of the state where your car is registered.

That seems like an overreach to me. But who can argue with padding DC coffers?

I know people that have run without plates for years and never get ticketed in VA, and I think it's more strict here. I used a tow hook plate previously and it didn't look extremely offensive.

You could try the one that has a motor and sits under your car, but you'll have to drill holes to the bottom of the bumper

Yeah, if you can get away with it in VA, I'll definitely take my chances in MD. (I've had a couple of speeding tickets in VA that were classified as reckless driving based solely on speed and had to report to court; I'm familiar with the gestapo tactics in the Commonwealth.)

Thanks!

Yep, good old Commonwealth. I don't have mine on either and haven't been stopped yet. I stayed safe with 35% tint and I won't take my car to DC.

I knew it was going to be somewhat sacrilegious, but I had the dealer put the front plates bon. I'm too old and too busy to deal or worry about "what-ifs". I'm happy for the ones that have been getting away without their fronts, may the force be with you.

I dont know why DC would enforce this for out of state cars. Say someone from FL parks in DC, would they get a ticket. In FL you dont need front license plates. If I were you I would have fought this.

As for the OP I live in VA and planning on having no front license plate for as long as possible. Have not been stopped yet.

The car with FL plates would not get a parking ticket/tow in DC because FL does not require a front plate. DC can ping you if you fail to keep your car in compliance with the laws of the state where your car is registered. DC knows all the rules in the DMV!

I live in Northern Virginia, commute to DC and Maryland (PG County) on which I've been without front licence plate on my previous 2016 M4 and 2015 Mini JCW, and now with new G82, never had any issue.
However, with window tinted below legal limit (25% all around), I do try being cautious when undercover or police car is around by distance myself or go right next to them to cover my missing front license plate. I think with previous cars, it can easily be missed unless you pay close attention but with G82's huge grill, I can imagine first thing you'll notice is without a front license plate... just a guess.
having said, since G82 is my weekend car, I havn't had much time to expose much out in wild.
My guess is that in any tri-state, unless they are specifically seeking vehicle without license plate, which I have never seen, would move on their way. But noticeably, I do see quite few vehicle with out front plates (a lot I've see on tesla model 3) .
at worse case, you get a ticket and go court to prove that you installed front plate :P

My also guess is that unless you are noticeable (i.e high speed) on the road and get cop's attention, you can move on with your day.
With so many state police on Maryland toward PG county, seen few many idiots getting pulled over for speed, several without front plate, having their car ransacked, especially by the capitol height area.I can surely bet they will get hefty something regarding their missing front plate. Saw many Dodge Charger (swear every single modded car in the area seems Charger with stupid unpleasant exhaust sound) getting pulled over on the side with 3-4 cop car scooping every detail of the vehicle.

So far, 6 year without front and no trouble :P

I'm pretty sure you cannot get pulled over anymore solely for a license plate, at least in VA you can't. There has to be a moving violation of some sort (speeding, red light runner, etc) I've driven without a front tag for about 15 years now in VA & only have received a ticket once which was in Fairfax, live in PWC.

Thanks. The reality is that, if a trooper sees something he doesn't like, it's not hard for him to tail you until he sees some justification for a primary offense/violation. Similarly for other secondary offenses like tinted windows, loud exhaust, or holding a cell phone.

Yeah, not 100% in MD but you can't be pulled over for tint, exhaust or front tag in VA. Those are all now secondary offenses, not holding a steady line, speeding, etc. etc will get you pulled over though and then everything else follows.

Grumpy514 Sorry for being unclear (just updated my post); I was providing examples of other secondary offenses (in MD at least) that may catch a Trooper's attention enough to find a primary excuse for pulling you over.

I read somewhere that loud exhausts have moved to primary offenses now with Youngkin signing it. Is this true?
