Just curious, what pedigree of BMW loyalty he had to have to be able to purchase one?

I don't think he walked in and said I'd like one, here's $700k. I'm curious what else he's got in his garage.

Boris Said has it, not BMW of Murrieta. He happens to own the dealership.

The profit margin on this car must be hilariously high.

Maybe. I think the answer is producing a 50 run car with extensive carbon handcrafting and custom painting by a very large manufacturer is absurdly inefficient when you factor in all of the functions and salaries that touch the project. I would not be surprised if the ROI is modest. Not to say the car is worth it, but for a huge manufacturer to pump out 50 of anything that's materially custom the cost explodes exponentially. A reverse economies of scale of sorts.

Brought to the US under the ‘show and display exemption’?

I think you nailed it.
Prototype parts for OEM car development programs are typically made in greater quantities than 50 and are in the range of 5 -15x the final production part cost. Of course, a very large part of this car is carryover from the M4, but those parts that are not standard are going to be very expensive, particularly when you add in the labor cost for the hours of hand build and painting that BMW has talked about.
Putting this in context, however, assuming they make $300,000 profit per car - which could be on the high side - that is still ‘only’ $15 million profit. That is decimal dust compared to the $26 billion profit they made last year.
They didn’t do this for the money…

Still gets to drive it up to 2,500 miles per year in that case. Which is way more per year than most people will ever drive this car…
