I have had my car for a month - 2023 M4. The shift action and the clutch have exceeded my expectations. I was concerned to get the manual based on comments about rubbery shifter and rough 1-2 shifts etc. I have experience none of that. To me the shifter “shnicks” (highly technical term) into each gate with a very satisfying feel and the clutch take up has smooth and predictable. If one is on the fence about getting one of the last (relatively) affordable new cars with a manual, I say go for it while you still can.

I’ve been back and forth between Base and XDrive so much… it seems like I go back and forth each day. I really would love another manual, this time with 4 doors!

My last manual was a 2008 135i which I loved so much I could never sell .

I’m enjoying my 2023 MT G80. I do wonder sometimes what it would be like to have the auto tho with laser sharp shifts via slapping paddles. But the manual is nostalgic and I love knowing I’m driving one and there are so few left on the road.

Love your highly technical term. Can’t wait to feel the schnickiness (or is is schnickers) when my MT is here (currently scheduled for production in a few weeks). And, in seriousness, happy to hear you describe the 1-2 shift as a “non-issue.” It made me nervous seeing comments about that.

I actually can’t imagine the world of no MTs and when I do, it’s terrifying. I love to feel the connection to my car and to have two way communication that allows me to get better at driving it. Almost considering trading this one in for the 2027 just so it lasts longer. I have to be able to teach my kids the fun of a manual transmission (especially because it can also get completely hilarious when first timers don’t know the clutch point and don’t give it enough gas….that jerky feeling is something I need to pass on).

And to OP, hopefully I’ve got some experiences to share in about 3-4 months so I’ll be checking back on this thread as well as a few others discussing the MT.

I have about 3.5k on a my 2022 6MT. I don’t have any issue with it. I mostly got the 1-2 shift down. Also i really don’t drive the car that hard. I figured this will be my last opportunity to get a manual transmission. However many more cars in my future that will have an automatic.

3k miles in and I mostly got the 1-2 shift down. I have a clutch stop, did a cdv delete, and put a weighted shifter. It’s my first manual car ever and although it’s taken some getting used to, I wouldn’t trade it for an auto for sure.

I've only got a few hundred miles on my Base '23, but I'll share my first impressions.


1) Are you loving it

Yes, absolutely. Zero regrets, super happy!

2) Is the shifter feel mechanical enough for you.

Yes, all the complaints about a rubbery shift feel are way, way overblown in my opinion. I was nervous given the reviews, but I'm quite satisfied with the shift feel. While not as precise as my Carrera T was, it still feels quite good to me.

3) What has your clutch engagement been in sport vs efficiency modes.

Hard to say at this point. Need more driving time, but initial impression is that it is simply easier to modulate the throttle in conjunction with the clutch engagement in efficient mode since the throttle response is more subdued.

4) Time it takes for Transmission to warm up.

Hard to say at this point, as my transmission is so new it likely needs to break in a bit more in general.

5) Points you like to share

First point is that if you want a manual transmission but are worried about getting the Base because of this particular transmission, just stop worrying and order the Base car.

Literally in my first few days driving the car I thought to myself about 50 times "thank goodness I got the manual".

I know the auto is faster, etc., etc., but I personally find daily driving pretty boring with an auto, and every time I get a car with a manual versus an auto my feelings are validated. So in my first few days with the car rowing the gears I found it very rewarding, and fun. And therefore, I was very glad I didn't buy into all the negative chatter around this manual.

As for the 1-2 shift, it's an absolutely non-issue for me, and was a non-issue from mile 1. At least not at shifts under 5,000 rpm as I am still following the break-in. More importantly, I am having no problem shifting from 1 to 2 between 15 to 25 mph, which seems to be the range I'm shifting in for normal driving, with the typical shift probably around 20 to 21 mph. The 1-2 shift in my Carrera T was way more finicky in fact.

For anyone having trouble with the 1-2 shift, I think you'll figure it out in time. I definitely have an advantage here dealing with the Porsche. But again, non-issue for me, and I find it pretty easy to shift smoothly.

As for a CDV delete, not sure I'm even going to bother with that as, quite honestly, the stock setup feels fine to me. I did the CDV delete in my VW GTI and it made a subtle difference, but that car felt like it needed it. This one doesn't to me. However, people seem to rave about improved clutch feel when deleting it, so maybe, possibly at some point in the future I'll do it.

As for going with a weighted shift knob, I'll also file this under the "maybe at some point" department, but I don't feel any pressing need as I find the stock shift knob just fine for now. I could see a weighted knob improving the feel a bit, but I also think it could simply make it "different" versus "better", and I want more time with the stock one for now.

So again, is this the best manual transmission in the entire world? No. However, if you want a manual transmission, will you regret getting a Base because this one is perceived by some as being inferior to most? No.

Like anything you read on the web, things tend to get exaggerated, and I personally think this is the case here. So far I love the feel of this manual, I don't find it "rubbery", and it's fun and engaging to drive. So put your worries aside and buy the Base if you want to row your own.

Absolutely loving it -- brings me back to the days when I routinely drove manuals. I did not realize how much I missed a manual transmission until I picked mine up at PCD (funny story -- when I told the delivery guy I have not had a manual in 25 years, he made me blind shift all gears (except for R -- which was hard to find the first time!)). Do not regret the decision for one second! It adds a different dimension to driving. The only thing I had to get used to was the electronic parking break -- sure wish it had a manual handbrake!

I personally wouldn't quite say they are laser sharp. The upshifts are quick enough, although certainly nothing close to how a PDK feels. The downshifts are nowhere near what I would describe as laser sharp, as there is a noticeable delay. Small one, but again, noticeable enough to lose that very "direct" and "instant" connection between what your hands are telling the transmission to do, and when it is doing it.

Now, I drove the autos on the track at M School and found them to be exceptional transmissions. They shift faster than I ever could in a manual car. And they are also very smooth when not driving all out on the track.

So nothing I am saying is to suggest that they aren't absolutely fantastic transmissions. Rather, I don't think they are laser sharp after having owned a number of cars with excellent dual-clutch transmissions including PDKs (Porsche) and DSGs (Audi).

My x5m has the zf8, which by itself is a great auto gearbox, but the car got boring really fast. I have a base 6mt and I'm really loving it. All it took was one test drive and I knew it was for me. Prior to picking up the g80 6mt, I had an order in for a comp x and while that was taking some time, I almost bought a giulia quadrifoglio.

I've got nearly 6k miles behind the wheel on my 2022 G82 6MT and have absolutely zero regrets. I've had many different manual vehicles over the years, including some of the most popular (S2000, Porsche, Corvette, Mustang and Miata) and prefer my sports and sporty cars with a manual transmission. I have about 25yrs of driving manuals under my belt, and would put the G82 feel somewhere near the top for smoothness and most daily-driveable. The S2000 had the best shifter feel hands down and this doesn't touch that, but the G82 is easy to drive. I have no issues at all with the 1-2 shift. Coming from a C7 corvette with an aftermarket shifter, the G82 is much lighter in feel.

I'm definitely a fan of manual transmissions though and didn't even consider this car without one, so im biased.

Clutch engagement is a little higher in sport plus

Not long in the summer, a few minutes during winter

Overall like the transmission. Comparison to my WRX w a weighted knob and short shifter - throws are a little long, less notchy, but smoother in comparison. Def would buy it again.

What’s crazy is some cars are seemingly coming new from factory without the CDV?!?! A whole thread dedicated to it. Maybe that’s why 1-2 shift is issue for some and not others. :-)

For those who have a manual and have driven a comp, is the lesser torque/hp a noticeable difference?

When I’m on the throttle in my comp and pass 4k that “rush” is thrilling! Asking since I’m contemplating my next car and really considering trading my comp rwd for a MT for driver engagement and missing my old MT bmw’s.

I mean, there a difference of 70 lb-ft of torque. You will definitely feel the difference. I've had my base G80 close to two years now and the best I can articulate it is it is very linear like an NA engine. With that said, even the base is way too fast for the streets. I'm attending one of those M Town events just to see what the comp feels like but I will never get rid of my MT. It is plenty fast for me.

This is my first manual car and I only have 1500 miles on it

1. I think so i'm not sure. I wonder if I will get better over time
2. I don't know. What does it mean to feel mechanical?
3. I can't tell to be honest I don't really drive in efficient

5. My 1 - 2 shift is very jerky and the only thing I found that helps is to release the clutch slowly and slip it. Is there anything I'm missing?

Reading this thread with interest, as I opted for xDrive for winter traction but plan on getting another G82 toward the end of production. Vast majority of my cars over the years have had manual transmissions, and I enjoyed them for the added engagement. Questions I have to ask myself before I eventually pull the trigger:

1. Can I safely drive a base M4 in snow and occasional ice with proper winter tires (using Michelin Pilot Alpin 5s now)?

2. How much will I miss adaptive cruise control (much of my commute is a 2-lane road with slower vehicles and limited passing zones)?

3. Will I miss the extra torque vs. the added engagement?

I have a few more years to decide, but appreciate others' experience and comments -- keep 'em coming!

Great questions. Looking for some of the exact comment/answers to help with my decision.

I've had my MT G80 since the end of the delivery embargo in March of '21 and I'm near 14k miles (telework, so no commute miles)

1) Are you loving it

Yes. 25 years of manuals followed by 8 years of auto BMWs and I'm STILL a bit angry with myself for thinking I'd be happy with the autos.

2) Is the shifter feel mechanical enough for you

It's mechanical enough. However one would want to describe the rubbery-ness, it's not as bad as described by some folk. Also, there's a break-in period for this unit. It's a heap more fun after a few thousand miles than it is when new.

3) What has your clutch engagement been in sport vs efficiency modes

It is easier to manage smoothly in Comfort, but I rarely drive in Comfort. Past 2nd gear, there's no "smoothness" issue for the rest of the range in any mode.

4) Time it takes for Transmission to warm up

A few minutes, and as stated above it varies by ambient temps like all other warm-up characteristics. 1st to 2nd is where warm-up matters most.

5) Points you like to share

There are so many aspects of managing your car that can be done with a manual and a clutch. It's not just the engagement when driving fast. It's also speed management in traffic. Slowing down your shift when you're behind a car that doesn't take off quickly at a stop light. Holding distance with a bit of engine braking. Not having to change modes to keep your transmission from shifting mid-curve. Etc.

Folk who have never spent time with a manual transmission car think it's all about the shifting and it isn't.

Lucky:

I think you'd be better off with a more serious winter tire than the Alpins as they're great for light snow but not really heavy snow. Sottozeros will be better snow tires. I'm pretty sure there are a ton of discussions about snow tires in the tires section. But, with the right tires you'll be just fine.

Hard to say. You will probably miss it, but I don't think any of us can say how much. I've never had adaptive cruise but my SO uses his on his 530e constantly. He doesn't actually LIKE driving so it would be a deal breaker for him. I'm guessing that you are not in the same boat.

3. Will I miss the extra torque vs. the added engagement?

Also hard to say. I wouldn't give up the manual for the extra power. I haven't felt that my car is missing anything in the 26 and a half months that I've had it, power-wise.

1) I've always driven a manual so I'd be pretty unhappy without one. Can't say I'm loving this one, though.

2) After using it for a while I've realized I'm just not a big fan of BMW transmissions. A little too rubbery and vague, and the notchiness that exists isn't a particularly good type of notchiness. I'm a big fan of the Tremec units in American cars -- those always had a very precise, bolt-action rifle kinda feel to me with very satisfying and positive gear engagement.

I have driven a G80 with the Rogue Engineering SSK - and while that felt better than stock, it still didn't feel that great. I don't need super short throws, just more feel.

I did install a Billetworkz weighted shift knob recently and that has improved my experience. It does away with most of the "bad" notchiness.

3) Comfort is easier to drive smoothly, but I'm almost always in Sport+. I did the CDV delete early on and that helped a bit with more consistent and precise clutch operation.

4) Outside of winter it doesn't take long at all, maybe a couple minutes.

5) After 15k miles with the BMW manual, I can say it's my least favorite of any of the manual cars I have owned. I came close to trading it on on a CT5V Blackwing (with the glorious Tremec 6spd) but ultimately decided to stick it out because I am enjoying the overall package.
