I tracked my 991.2 gt3 occasionally, just took delivery of my 992 gt3 and I will do a few track days with it as well.

Not sure if you were being serious about how many people do that because when you look at the purpose of the CSL here, what is it’s purpose? Not even going to mention the GT lineup because we know what they’re built to do and their price tag associated with the experience.

I could get your perspective if you took an M8 GC at its price tag and asked that same question though.

I have never taken my m8gc to the track though it might be fun for a lap or two.

two different animals
I have driven both on few occasions on the same back roads
I like to focus on the positive of each car rather than the negative and how it compares to another car

I’ve never driven GT3 but to me 911 in general is a different car and class and fact that they even comparing to G8x platform (I know it’s csl) is a huge victory for BMW.
I think 911 is next level but I like that we can even be in conversation….

I've driven both on the street and the CSL is more comfortable and fun.

The GT3 needs space + nice roads to stretch it's legs and provide a feeling of excitement, at slow speeds it's punishing on bad roads and feels like a caged animal.

The CSL is fun right from 0 to top speed but doesn't feel as capable or confidence inspiring. The ZF8 doesn't match the PDK that's a given of course.

The subject is pretty beaten to death, all in all I think the CSL is a great value at MSRP for shear excitement in a versatile package that you will be able to drive a few hours to and from the track without going insane. Is it the best of the best technically, no but it's got an honest soul.

If you can afford it and have the chance to get a GT3 at MSRP just get one, you owe it to yourself to experience it at least one time in your life. Maybe you'll keep one forever or maybe you will only have one for a year, it doesn't matter, it's just worth it.

So what would make it deserving???

GT3's can be found much easier than a CSL. The problem is cost and usability; both of which make the proposition of a GT3 prohibitive to most people. While I agree that the CSL isn't going to be daily driven by the large majority of people who own the car, neither is the GT3. Most are garage queen brag-mobiles or Cars & Coffee trophies.
No way gt3 can be found easier. Right now I have a csl offer with 10k off in the bay area, there are quite a few csl on auto trader at msrp. Gt3 are 50-100k above msrp used.

I see a lot of gt3 owners on the track. I track mine a lot. Not sure what the point is if you do not track it. These are not comfy cars.

There was an article 10 or so years ago that took a survey of GT3 owner….over 80% had taken them to the track at some point. I think that might be a little high but I can say there are tons of $100k+ cars at the track these days. I’d say at least 25% are over $100k if not higher. There is a LOT of money out there!

You are absolutely right!

Cars of CSL and GT3's caliber deserve to be tested under optimal conditions (including dry tarmac) by qualified individuals to truly evaluate what they are capable of.

It is a complete disservice to our community to put out "reviews" conducted under completely suboptimal conditions and pretend they have any real value to sports car enthusiasts.

YES, a GT3 can be found easier than a CSL around here in So.Cal. You’ll pay, but it’s easier to procure a GT3 than a CSL simply because….

…..*light bulb*….there are more of them out there.

I could get my hands on a GT3 tomorrow if I wanted to pay the mark-up.

There is a CSL I drive by every day that has been in the showroom sitting for almost 2 months now. No markup needed. No one wants to buy it.

Two things, the chief engineer/designer(I forgot which one) said on an interview with a car YouTuber that this CSL is very much designed on being on the road, not track duty at all. Secondly, last gen F80 m4 GTS never even came close to the performance of a 991.2 GTS on the Nurburgring, why would ppl expect a non track focused G80 CSL to beat a 911 on the track let alone a double-wishbone 992 GT3. I don’t get it. 911 is a dedicated platform designed from the frame to be a Porsche sports car. G8X have to start with a shared BMW 3/4 chassis. Our BMWs handle pretty well, are very luxurious, and practical. Simply different target audiences.

the trouble is, the CSL is neither amazing for the road nor the track

not that i have ever been in one, but the hard core reviewers (those that track their cars and drive them on the road properly) say that the CSL is too wild, can't get power down, too loose.

if you want a fast car on the road, G80/82/F99

if you want a fast car on the track ... let's not go there!

lots of folks do HPDE events in these cars. My last event had a bunch of BMWs (M3 and M8), a huracan STO, Subarus, and a slew of Porsches.

they are meant for the track
