Everyone seems to be catching up
Before I start, im not saying the G8x is the fastest thing since Usain Bolt but.......
Have anyone else noticed how anything classed as a performance car is hitting 0-60 times in around 3.5secs or less. The Xdrive 240i has been hitting 3.2secs in some tests. Likewise, Audi RS3s and we know Merc A45 S are all hitting similar figures too. Kia have their EV6 GT coming out next year with 540(or so) BHP and Hyundai Ionic 5N with its 500+bhp hatchback out next year which are both gonna be mid 3secs to 0-60 and no doubt they'll pul like a train too being EVs. I know theyre different gravy, afterall an M is an M is an M and theres no beating that badge for its sporting history and prowess but the accessibility of such 'speed' doesnt feel quite as special (or does it?) as it once did due to the plethora of options available to the average car buyer these days. what do you think? |

0-60 means nothing anymore.

I personally think there's a lot of nuances with speed. I will admit that when cars started breaking the 4 second 0-60 I was like , because it felt like such an easy figure now. But, I also remember when sports cars back then did it in 5 or 6 seconds and we were amazed. Your average Camry does that now with better fuel efficiency. It's just the advancement of technology. I've given up on the 0-60 speed rabbit hole the moment Teslas pioneered viable electric vehicles. You would have to put a lot of engineering and ponies into a gas car before you can legitimately beat an S Plaid on a 0-60.
But fun for us doesn't end at 60 mph does it? No, I think with the g8x's fun STARTS at 60mph, and damn does it go. Even though it's a heavier chassis than its predecessor, it's just as fun to throw around at low or high speeds. I think that's what separates our M cars from cars that just have the under 4 second 0-60 that they've just achieved. Pedigree and refinement. Anyone can strap a rocket or electric battery onto a car and get it to blast off a line, but how many cars can keep that intensity and power past 60? That's why we have 1/4 and 1/2 mile tests! |

I have noticed a lot of cars 0-60 times have been impressive. Especially as we go into the EV world. But to me it is more about the rest of the car. The driving dynamics and comfort and how capable the car is in more than just a straight line. Fast Launch Controls or 0-60's are fun, but dim down fast in comparison to how the car can handle a track or cutting a canyon road and having confidence in that car and being comfortable.
For example; the Tesla Model S Plaid is a beast, but I do not have much confidence in the brakes of that car after multiple launches. And I do not get the same feels in that as say an M or other performance car. And that is not something I would track. As far as the M240, BMW has been making great cars in the M Performance Line. Slight mods to some and you are pushing more power than an M. But the car does not compare in other aspects. My buddies Hellcat is a BLAST, but it is a boat and other than crazy launches, and being decently comfortable, it is just so heavy and not fun to toss around. The access to such speed is much more common, and it scares me, you have someone who cannot handle the speed in a capable car. Recipe for disaster. Heck, you have people in a Nissan Altima and they cannot handle that. Ha.

Especially the Altimas with tinted windows. They’re trouble.

Everything is fast in a straight line nowadays.
My Tesla friends remind me all the time that their shitty-built golf carts can get my G80 from a dig. They can. Don't care. When I meet a "car person" and their primary concern is 0-60… hard pass. |

This is not the appropriate line of thinking. This has always been the case. Remember when the r35 gtr came out and everyone talked about how it was the super car killer. But simply looking at straight line speed to place value on a lesser car is completely missing the point. An m3 can go toe to toe with an f430. But I know which one gets me more excited to drive… and it’s not the Tesla. Wait….what?

They've all been in the 3.8 range with LC as far as I've seen. Which is still amazingly quick (for a non-M car, no less), but it's not 3.2.
And yes, as others point out now that vanilla EVs can routinely deploy huge torque figures, acceleration numbers that were once the domain of 911 Turbos are much more commonplace. But it doesn't mean a five-ton Hummer EV is a sports car, or something I'd want to drive.

I think you will see many more speed related accidents. People who have never driven enthusiastically are hopping in cars with outrageous acceleration and going bananas. I had a 70-80 year old dude in a Tesla wanting to race me while on my Triumph Speedmaster cruiser. No thank you pops. Go kill someone else.

The M3 is an ICE car that can be as fast and faster than performance EVs. Add the drama from the exhaust and intake, gorgeous lines, excellent interior.. what's not to love? It will continue to be a special car, regardless of what other mfg's are bringing to the market, in my opinion.

If someone bought a G8X thinking it’d give them skills they didn’t have, then the G8X may not feel as special as it could. I’m not speaking to my skill or anyone else’s skill here, but I’d hope that people who buy G8X cars are actually skilled at handling them very significantly better than the general public. For such a set of people, other cars improving on one metric is kind of meaningless and not really worthy of consideration. I know people who own both a Model 3 Performance and a high performance sports car (usually purchased again after realizing the M3P is a clinically boring one-trick pony built to a price). For the unskilled and undiscerning, the Model 3 Performance may be enough to feel special. But if you have a refined taste and skill, you don’t have to second-guess purchasing a G8X or a proper sports car from Porsche. Last edited by kjx; 07-19-2022 at 05:21 PM.. |

yea seems like op is comparing the official bmw m3 0-60 numbers with some anecdotal tests of other cars from other car mags/youtubers. In 'some tests' the m3 has hit 60 in 3.0 seconds flat or less

Trap speed at the end of the 1/4 is more important. A lot of cars are quicker than the M4/3 Comp to 60, then less so through the quarter. The trap speed, however, shows the BMW will leave it for dead after the 1/4 or catch up quickly, e.g., C8 & 992 S2. I have always been more interested in 50-80 punch--or rolling as it's now called. AWD means nothing and few cars anywhere near the price point will keep up with the G82 Comps.

There is always going to be a car that is faster - Always! When it arrives, my 2023 M4 Competition xDrive Coupe will be faster than the C8 Corvette, or that's what I read in Car & Driver (I was also considering buying a C8). My M4 will do 0-60 in 2.8 seconds according to Car & Driver. That's much faster than any funny car that raced when I graduated high school in 1971. A friend of mine has a Tesla Plaid that is Star Trek "Beam Me Up Scotty" fast on the road, but it feels too light, is rough riding, and the seating is very uncomfortable. There is also very little storage. Another friend just got a Porsche Taycan GTS. It is also super-fast, and it is very comfortable to drive. Now, I would rather have this car, possibly? as compared to the M4 X: drive Coupe, maybe, because that is one super quick comfortable ride that actually gives you seat of the pants excitement, and sound, both electronically manufactured for your pleasure since it is an electric car after all. But he paid $165,000 plus taxes and fees, and I'm paying about $96,000 all-in including taxes and fees, etc. I've had 4 Corvettes including a ZO6 and this will be my 7th BMW. Some cars just fit like a glove, and both my wife and I prefer BMWs.

There will always be someone faster and I don't buy a car necessarily for that. My skill is limited and I am mature enough to know this and am taking my time learning my car instead of when I first get in it and impress my friends and end up in a tree or a ditch. I have plenty of time to k ow and enjoy my car. Not a 1 year owner or less and selling my car and then telling everyone it wasn't raw enough for me.

additionally to your valid point I personally don't give a crap about 1/4 and 1/2 mile stuff (I think's it's more of a U.S. thing). For me important is: - How fun is the car to drive? - How is the daily liveablity? - how does it handle in the corner? - Controllable, massive power around a track or curvy road? - easy to drift? As the M2/M3/M4 all offer these points with big pluses for me the choice was easy. M3 more than M2 because of daily stuff. Oh and....MANUAAAAAL <3 I mean we're talking about a car that is near and over 500 bhp. That's ton's of power...but with the advanced tech quiet a lot of cars can achieve good 0-60 times, these 500bhp come to play when running this car wild. |
