How many folks are replacing TTY bolts and reindexing bushings?
I splurged on a TIS membership for the day and I came away with this question...
Although shops are doing spring installs for pretty cheap, it seems very rare that any shop outside of a dealer will replace these bolts or reindex the bushings for the new drop. I haven't seen these steps mentioned in the MSS or any one else DIY video/instructions. No wonder BMW charges what they do since they go by the book procedure and time which does seem to have its benefits. How important are each of these steps? Admittedly, as kids working on cars I never knew what a torque spec even was let alone a TTY bolt or indexing a bushing. "Very snug" seemed to get us by. TIS is quite the source of info! I even went to the jacking section where it clearly states the use of the rear differential as a jack point. No mention of caution due to the fins or anything.

Good questions. I can only share a couple relevant articles that I just found.

I always replace TTY bolts and preload the bushings when installing suspension components.
The BMW installation manual of the F87 M Performance HAS, however, does not specify clocking the bushings. Probably because the KW supplied MP HAS does not go as low as the aftermarket version. I guess for moderate drop (<1"), not clocking the bushings does not have much adverse effect than the more aggressive drops. |

The shop I used asked if I wanted to replace the tty bolts when they did my AST springs and I said yes. I went with them because they were the only shop to bring it up. I'm glad they did however my new issue is that I'm getting a creaking noise in the front over certain bumps. It almost sounds like rubbing (I do have 15mm spacers and Pzeros) but I can't confirm. I took it back to them and they adjusted the top mounts and springs in the perches and it got rid of ~85% of the noise but I still hear it at times... it's driving me crazy tbh. Not sure what could be causing it. There are no bushings up front to reindex are there?

tom @ eas you guys have installed a few of these sets now... any complaints about this sort of noise or what the root cause could be, in case of improper install?

Likely install related. Shop needs to make sure all bolts are torqued properly and rubber spring insulator isn't torn. Usually we'll add a light layer of grease before seating the spring so this doesn't happen. If the boot is already torn, it will need replacement.

I just picked up the car and can't hear any noise which is good. They only charged me $76; not even a full hour's worth of work. Plus, they finally were able to do the diff fluid for the break-in service as when I had it done originally a few weeks ago they didn't have any diff fluid in stock.

Most shops use a light coating of grease on the boot when assembling to prevent this from happening during installation.

What about the spring itself? Is there a proper orientation like the printed part number should face up/ the rubber isolators on the spring itself should be near the top? Sorry for asking all these questions but I appreciate everyone's support! |

Springs are tapered, they cannot be installed upside down.

It sounds like according to Tom, the fronts can only go in the way you have them, so that's good at least lol

So the saga continues... greasing the coils was just a temporary solution. When I swapped my winter wheels on yesterday and had the suspension decompressed it must've removed/displaced some grease as the noise is back to almost as bad as it was originally.
Per Tom's feedback, I purchased two new dust boots (just in case) and am bringing the car to AutoCouture next week for them to check out.

Sorry OP, I know this is off topic and I'll be done after this post but wanted to give a final update on my noise situation... purchased new dust boots and took the car to Autocouture to have them take a look. They replaced the dust boots and reinstalled everything the way they would normally do it and so far on the 2 hr ride home I have no noise! They told me the original install looked good for the most part and the original boots were still in tact. They did notice the bottom rubber spring isolator was maybe a little shifted but not sure if that contributed to the noise.
Anyway, I'm happy now... I guess to tie it together with the OP's question, I had zero issues on the rear where TTY bolts were replaced
