The problem is BMW are epic at Infotainment (iDrive is pretty much regarded the best) and drivetrains are of course absolutely fantastic.
However so much of a car purchase is pure emotion. You have to LOVE the looks. Take a look at these differing segments (BMW are killing it with the X series TBF probably due to awesome lease rates) But I think lots of compact crossover look better. Volvo XX here vs X1z RS5 Sportback vs M3 render. I just don't feel too much positive for BMW future designs. They just seem to be going radical ... just because?! Land Rover/Range Rover talk of reductionism, which I feel looks great and every progressive design team seems to heading this way. Look at all recent Volvos. I'd be signed off Bimmerpost for mentioning them 5 years ago but their SUVs look fantastic, future ready and very uncomplicated in design. Same with the Velar. How many vents, swoops, slats and grills do BMW need. The new 3 series lights (designers think we MUST make it different) so it now has a useless little notch in the lights. I'm ranting now and don't honestly want to hate on BMW, I'm on about 12 in the last 20 years but the designs have lost me. Sad times

I'm happy my F80 has been bulletproof because she's going to remain in my stable for a few more years.
Maybe I will grab a G80 M3 in a couple years, at a hefty $20k discount since dealers won't be able to move them off the lots. |

BMW seems obsessed with breaking from past design elements and traditions instead of respecting and evolving in an incrementally handsome way. I say this as a practicing industrial designer with an automotive background and Transportation Design training from Art Center. I feel this is a case of the designer's ego trying to make it's mark and create controversy regardless of the impact to an attractive design. This is non-conservative and "edgy" in the wrong way.
From a practical and integration standpoint, where does the license plate go? Did they think of those requirements? By law in most states, there will need to be a plate up there and it will look even more ridiculous. Part of the designers challenge is to work with requirements and develop creative solutions that yield an attractive design. I'll withhold final judgement until I see it completely, but these grilles are so poorly done, it's hard to imagine the full picture will improve things. It certainly won't be sitting in my garage.

Unless for some reason they slapped the M3/M4 grille on a regular M Sport 4er. |

The garish, in your face design is reflective of BMW's new target market.

Well this takes all the happiness I had about a manual and just... ugh
Even with normal grilles, that bumper would be over complicated. Maybe I'd swap on a M340 fascia and keep the rest the same. |

If I were in the market for a new M3, I would have to find a way to eventually ignore the grill design. The car is much more than just a grill.
