Why is the park button low on the shifter?

I think it's been this way for awhile now on other cars, but it's been a some years since I've driven a regular auto BMW. The only experience I have driving the cars with the newer shifter was at M Track Days. It seems to me that the park button is in kind of an awkward spot. You have to contort your thumb down a bit to get to it. I suppose this keeps you from accidentally pressing it, but I can't say it's ever a problem I had in the past. Anyone know about the design? I suppose you just get used to it.

This location seemed find to me.

Now it's here:

It's deactivated while in motion anyways. I think it's just for design.

It is sort of an after thought, but it's also not really needed assuming it works the same way as it does in the M8. I could just turn off the car in gear, and it automatically goes into park similar to what you had to do in the DCT. There's just the added benefit that I could park the car while running without leaving it in neutral or shutting it off now.

I like the new position from a design standpoint but I never had issues with the old design on my F30 (top pic).

What do you like about the new design? And yes, the old placement seemed to work fine.

You get used to it to the point when I drive a loaner with the regular shifter it feels weird. Another part I really like about the M shifters is moving Reverse to the left and up of Neutral kind of like engaging reverse in a manual transmission.

I've used the actual park button maybe 5x in 2 years. I always turn my car off in gear because auto hold keeps it there and putting the car in park isn't necessary. I like how it's out of the way because we don't need to use 99% of the time

OK, didn't know that about it. If it works sort of like the DCT where it auto parks when you turn the car off then I agree, you don't need to actually press it very often and it's otherwise out of the way. Does it put it into park though or just leaves it in gear?

if you shut off the car in gear even with the lever in 'S' it will go back to the center position and place itself in park with the parking brake set. that's how my 2019 X5 50i works at least

Here is cross post photo snareman of the F95 M shifter as it's the same for the upcoming G80/82/83. Coming over from the previous F83 and F85, the new M shifter the past 2 days been an adjustment- as I loved the rounded short previous shifter.

Did they throw in the mugs with your delivery? Are you pressing the park button each time you park it?

Indeed

For my use case though, the P button in a BMW auto is barely used.

Well if that was my fun answer here's my real answer.

The world was already burning with a move from DCT to ZF gearbox. The DCT shifter as I'm sure you know is bereft of a P button.

Thus the P button on the new ZF shifters was 'minimised ' to lesser highlight the change. As per my use case above it's also less used so has been kept, just, but is put out of the way.

I actually think that's highly likely.

I didn't realize initially that you didn't have to actually press it to put it into park as you would have to move a regular auto shifter into the park position when you park. I guess if the car 'auto parks' when you turn it off as the DCT did then it sounds like its not really as important of a change. So, does the car go into Park or is it just left in gear when you turn it off without pressing the button?

It goes into park on its own.

Even better if it was pushed over to the left and in the manual mode Up/Down track, and you stop, it still goes into Park and pops back over to the right.

Yes, the cups were included in delivery in a black shopping bag. Apparently they will work with the center consul cooled/heated cup warmers— it might be specific to models that have this feature. I stopped using the park button today after I read on the F95/F96 forums that it would park like the previous generation F85/F86.

Our X7 has the park button there, and I really dislike it. It's a very unnatural way to bend the thumb. I'm always needing to put the car in park while the engine is still running, and it bothers me every time. With everything these cars offer in terms of luxury, comfort, ergonomics, etc., I really think this is an obvious pain point that they should address. I feel like they should put it on the left of the gear selector where the unlock button currently is, and then move the unlock button behind it i.e. on the side closest to the dash. My Nissan Armada had the mechanical unlock button/lever there, and it was fantastic to operate in a hurry.

If I can ever get an allocation maybe I can find out for myself in a few months.

My X3M has a similar if not the same arrangement, I like it. Makes it feel less so of a regular auto box, and more of a DCT.
