M3/M4 Differentiation

There should be more differences IMO between the M3 and M4 than just the number of doors.

Sharing certain designs and features, sure, but not being equal.

The M4 is a bit sportier as most coupe version of sedans are, but generally the 3 and 4 version of all trims are fairly equivalent. The dashboard on these cars are basically interchangeable. The platform is virtually identical.

Splitting up the 3 sedan and coupe into the 3 and 4 was mostly a marketing decision. The 4 is not actually a higher level car.

I'm just used to the old nomenclature of bmw where the numbers signifies a higher model.

I'm aware though of how bmw uses the odd numbers for sedans and even numbers for coupes.

No, I agree with you, I think it's stupid. Audi did it EXACTLY because people think a higher number means it's a higher level of car. A lot of people actually believe that. Then of course BMW had to follow suit with the F3x generation. Mercedes actually was originally the one to use different nomenclature for their coupe cars and moved back to using the same names for 2/4 door cars recently.

The only reason it bothers me is that it's all marketing. I bet the engineers had a s*** fit when it was decided that was the direction they were taking. Think about all the history of the M3 and 3 series name being thrown out the window to keep up with some stupid marketing ploy by Audi, the "third" German luxury brand.

Agreed. The 3 series and M3 were the most iconic BMWs overall that have had their reputations completely screwed up by their marketing department.

When you have to start explaining that the old M3 is really now the M4 and so on, is when you know someone screwed up.

Higher model numbers basically meant larger cars. Now of course the larger cars had more content which was standard because there was more room in terms of pricing.

Forgetting about nomenclature for a moment, there have been reports that BMW will try to more differentiate the 3er and 4er in the G generation. We'll see in a couple years.

The M3 and M4 won't share the same front end this generation.

reality, its just BMWs new naming convention of SEDAN vs COUPE BUT, only for the 3 series...

in the E36 and E9x ///M3's there is no difference at all between the sedan and coupes.

E30 M3 = the ORIGINAL M4 | just waiting 5 generations until it decided to add +1 lol
