Word is... dealerships have something that fixes this.
They have their own sockets? I bought one because si got so sick of returning Amazon ones.

They will replace the front socket with the same part number as the one in the trunk if you ask nicely. Tell them that you have heard it was an issue on G series and that there is a tsb for it. The socket up front is setup for whatever design of cigarette lighter BMW uses and it's narrower at the bottom than normal 12v sockets. You can also install this part yourself, it's under ten dollars and only needs 2 screws to be removed.

Part number is 61347947771 if anyone is interested. You can also buy a backlit surround ring for it but there's no connector so it's a retrofit project for the future

You have to enable it in the car settings first..

Quote:
Enabling the automatic engine start function
The automatic engine start must be enabled once before using the system. Otherwise, the engine cannot switch on automatically to climatize the car's interior.

Via iDrive:

"CAR"
"Settings"
"Climate control"
"Preconditioning/ventilation"
"Remote Engine Start"
"Starting engine for clim. control"
Confirm the disclaimer.

This all said, I don't think remote start will work when I'm home as it's parked three levels under ground in a parkade. But for anywhere else I'm looking forward to it!
Important for what? To achive the fastest possible oilpressure buildup and distribution, one should start driving after some seconds. Standing there for minutes doesnt do the car any good. Doesnt harm either, it's literally for nothing.
Interesting, a BMW mechanic told me to do this. Re the M car I'm assuming it should be right up to full operating temperature before getting into it, if you know what I mean😉

Hold down the lock button. The windows will roll up and the mirrors will fold. I'm not sure if I had to enable that in the iDrive settings however.

I'll try it, again, later. I handed someone the keys at a meet, they told me it worked and they couldn't get it to work on my car, so, I just forgot about it. I'm going to mess with it, today. See if I need to get into the settings. I'll report back.

Yup, that has been a BWM staple for decades. I think as early as the E46 M3 maybe even earlier.

Yes, the car should be up to full temperature before sending it. But it does warm up best while driving.
Standing there with idling engine doesn't only take much longer, it's also less efficient for the engine. Just get moving and drive the car in a normal manner for 10mins before going haywire.

Hey BMW voice activation can do more than I realized

You can ask her to check the oil, the current miles per gallon, etc,,, you can say hey bmw I am cold and she will turn up the heat and turn on the heated seats and she is the only way I could get the ac to go off (but I know I saw a thread a while back that had another way so please remind me if you know)

The iDrive 7 "Lite" version in my SO's 2020 530e pisses him off to no end because I can tell my car that I'm cold and it doesn't work in his car. Along with other things my car does that his doesn't like the auto-lock on walkaway.

Hey BMW turn on/off the A/C works well. Or there are 8 buttons on the lower infotainment that you can create shortcuts with.

That's the fan/system as a whole - people are talking about running the fan without the A/C compressor on (which I do on nice days).

I'm not entirely sure but you really should never do that even if it's cold outside. We breathe out a lot of moisture and the AC keeps the system dry and prevents mold and mildew from forming inside the vents. There is a common misconception that AC is only for cooling air, but actually for removing moisture, which happens to also cool the air. Even in winter, AC on with the heater.
