How early can I go in for an oil change based on mileage

At what mileage can you go in for scheduled oil. My last car (F80) I could go in when the reminder came on. Now this car a reminder came on at 3100 miles. Just trying to get the oil change done as early as I can.

First one is 1200 miles or before, to get the break-in oils/fluids changed.

Then, per the BMW manual, it’s 12 months or 10k miles. Of course, some will get it done at 5k miles, for peace of mind, even if that means 2 oil changes per year.

Hope that helps!

Appreciate the response. So I did the usual break-in at about 1150. My question is regarding the counter and how early I can go in for scheduled service.

Will BMW perform the oil change if I bring it in at 5k at no cost?

Question is... how long ago was your break-in service? If it was a year ago and the car is prompting you to change the oil then do it.

I drive 13k miles a year so I’m going to hit my mileage limit first. I’m at 8389 miles (break in was done Dec 2022) and car warns 3101 left. Usually you can go in for an oil change as soon as the warning comes up.

I doubt it. If the break-in svc. has been done, and a customer takes their car in, I would venture to say they’ll either charge said customer, or, count it as one of the 3/36k ‘free’ services. Of course, all it would take is a call to the service dept. to verify that.

As for the OP, if your driving conditions are severe enough to warrant an oil change 3k miles early, then, do it. Otherwise, wait a few more miles.

Might depend on the dealership, but my service center allowed it when I brought my G82 in at 5k miles. I decided to just pay and use my free oil change when I hit 10k.

I’ll be taking mine in at 9k miles for an off schedule oil change. No problem in Uk and intervals here are just south of 18-20k miles. Cost is approx £360.

After break in, my warning light came on for the oil change at 8100. Dealer took care of it as part of the service plan. Just got another one done at 14k for peace of mind and that was around $190.

No, they usually want to see the service light before performing the free service.

So oil change light came on finally. I live in Austin and getting an appointment for service can take over a month especially if you need a loaner. What I was trying to ask was when does the light come on. The light came on for me between 1200-1300 miles left today. I timed it perfectly because I called a month ago for an appointment tomorrow.

This way I’m getting my oil change at the dealer every 8800 miles. Since I’m doing 75% highway miles I’m happy with that.

You can bring it in whenever you want you'll just have to pay if it's before the recommended interval.

I am coming up on a year and have about 5k miles. Didn't even consider bringing it in early but will do so this month.

I was just letting everyone know that you can bring it in when you have driven about 8800 miles and the oil change is included. Of course this is for those of us who drive more than 10k in a year.

I asked if they'll do my plugs at 20k instead of 30k. Hard no. When they asked me why I couldn't tell them because of the jb4 lol So I got a nice 5 minute lesson on spark plugs and how they normally last 100k, but Bmw does them at 30k because they're nice people lol My SA is really chill, I feel bad for playing dumb.

lol cause they are nice? They did my plugs at 20k cause they set the break in as the first cbs count. This happened with my last m too. Not complaining…

Not her exact words; but she made it seem like a favor they do to take care of our babies. She's nice, I can't knock her. She seems to really enjoy her job.

Now I get to be nice to my own baby before it blows up. No more e85 until I swap plugs. At least now I can gap them a little smaller.

They did them at 20k and 40k on the f80. Not sure why they changed the interval on the g80s.

I had the 1200mi break-in free, then drove roundtrip 2K mi. took it in for a 'self initiated peace of mind' and had to pay for that one. Happy, no, but expected it and paid as this is a keeper car. I expect that 'off-schedule' will be at your cost.

He probably wanted to get the rest of any remaining residue from the additional breakin level after the first 1200 miles. 3k miles isn’t a bad idea to do another clean out, just in case. Some people like to keep cars a long time… like 100-200k long. Haha Not saying that’s this guy, but oil changes is the lifeblood of a long running engine.

I do tend to keep cars for a long time, '96 318i, 11 years. I did the change for the reason you stated. I kept it mild till the 1200, then road trip where I did open it up more. I think engine crap is usually at the beginning of the life cycle. At 72, I suspect this car will outlast me as it is my old man go fast car.
