Windshield tint and HUD

Sorry if this has been asked before, search didn’t show me anything.

Is it possible to tint the windshield and not effect the HUD? Was planning on going with XPel XR Prime 70%

Thanks!

Yes. I just did the same with Stratos 70%. Zero functionality difference.

The only problem you'll have is with polarized glasses.

70% no issues....

Anyone try those BMW shades that are sorta polarized but you can still view the HUD? https://www.bmwblog.com/2023/02/03/b...isplay-review/

Thanks everyone.

I have 35% all around including windshield and no issues at all. Also no issues seeing at night... these cars come equipped with headlights afterall... IMO windshield tint is a game changer, both in how the car looks and also in heat rejection making the cabin so much more comfortable on bright sunny days.

Have it on both my M3 and X7... even my wife hasn't complained about visibility at night. And she complains about everything.

Windshield tint seems to improve my HUD and now I can see it with my polarized RayBans on.

I second this... I think the tint minimizes glare which makes the HUD clearer and easier to see. I noticed a similar improvement when I had the windshields tinted.

It'll look dimmer with polarized glasses, but still more visible with tint.

How could it get dimmer. I can barely see the HUD at its brightest setting with polarized glasses. I had to switch to regular glasses.

I think they meant compared to no sunglasses or non-polarized

Man, I wish this was my experience. I think I'll have to get some RayBans, because the HUD with my Oakley's and 70% Xpel XR Plus is still a black hole.

I will say that, with polarized sunglasses, I can also see my HUD w/ 70% Xpel XR Black (not Plus) but it's still *quite* dim. I use non-polarized Raybans anyway in the car because of this.

That's so strange , I also have 70% Xpel XR Plus and see perfectly with my polarized sunglasses.

I believe the Lens color and thickness play a factor here (mine are green) . YMMV

Some quick research on the interweb:

Sunglasses with green lenses provide better contrast than gray lenses and transmit color accuracy better than brown lenses and are ideal for both sunny and low-light environments. Perfect for water or field sports, cycling or skiing, green lenses protect and comfort your eyes on foggy, cloudy, or bright, sunny days.

It could be one other thing. Polarized glasses by definition have a direction. Try tilting your head to the side and see if the HUD disappears. When I wear my polarized glasses and tilt my head to the side I can see the HUD, but with my head straight vertical I cannot.

Out of curiosity, which glasses?

I still want to know how GM has a HUD that works with polarized glasses. Full color too. Almost a decade ago.
